When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Lately I've been enamored of my majestic computer generated picks. My only beef is that switching picks to find the right one is very tedious and annoying. I would like to see these in a more readily available jacknife configuration, and I want to do it myself. Has anyone ever converted standard picks to a jackknife set? I am very bad at this sort of thing and could use some good advice, ideas, etc.

I have used already made jacknifes. The scissors could be used as miniture picks or you could leave it attached. Either way you must take the rivet. Just simply drill it out. You can then make picks out of the blade ends. And you must then file down the sides just a little bit. This will help with the width.

I went out, bought a feeler gauge set and made my picks. They turned out quite well. The only problem with that is that I don't have anything that will support the pick while picking the lock. Tightening the screw doesn't do it which makes the pickset useless. Do you have a suggestion for something that I can attach to the pickset that will allow me to prevent the pick from folding. I just can't keep the pick straight.

For a simple temporary fix you could buy a $.25 superball from a gumball machine, and cut it down to make a fingerhold for it. Otherwise, you could try fashioning something out of wire that you could clip over the screws on each side. The only other thing I can think of offhand would be putting a washer in there to give yourself a little more to tighten down on.

the washer idea could work well i think especially if you put a spring steel washer in there... those seem to tighten up anythinga nd hold it in place... this would be easyestly (wow bad word) accomplished if you had a sort of thumb screw (like used on the back of computers a lot) that you were tightening. that way it is an all inclusive set and woulnd't need something to tighten it down to get it tight enough.

SFGOON,
This won't answer your question but it may save you SOME of the tedium of switching picks. I've started making a set of HPC clones from plumbing snake with heat shrink handles. The ones I've completed have turned out quite nicely but, like you, I don't want to carry and switch all eight. I've decided to start over with double-ended picks, one at each end. At least then I've got the next HPC already in my hand and only have to worry about four instead of eight. I like your jacknife idea but haven't had much luck with them in the past. Just me, I'm sure.
Off topic: Did they ever rename the auditorium at group headquarters in honor of MSG Roy Benavidez? There was some talk about that many years ago but I never heard the end result. Sorry, your screen name, location and occupation led me to certain conclusions. If I'm way off, please let me know.

SFGOON,
Whoops, you've got the Majestics. I guess the double ended idea would still only cut you from, what?, 32 to 16. Something like that, I guess. One suggestion to lock them in place, build the "jacknife" with a sliding bar to lock the current pick, maybe a piece of sheet stock and a stubby machine screw. Probably more difficult to describe than to actually build.

SFGOON, I ordered a second set of the majestics from lockpicks.com last night to go ahead and try converting. I'm gonna be out of town on business for two weeks come sunday but I'm taking my current set with me to dismantle and I'll come up with something to make it work. Have you seen those allen key sets that fold out in a Z pattern?
sorta like this.

I plan to make a jackknife similar to this out of the Majestic set. I think it should work but it its gonna take me two weeks before I can even get started, unless I find a friendly machine shop while I'm in chicago.

Well task, you're way off. I was with 7th SFG. I was in Seattle to get my degree at the UW, and now I'm a too old Liutenant at Fort Leonard Wood going to Chemical OBC. I'm being reminded daily of why I went to group. You yourself seem to have some pretty specific knowledge of areas surrounding Madigan. What's up with that?

I trained in 91C20 course at letterman gh in presidio before going to VN in 68, and on returning from VN in 69 was assigned to Madigan Gh, rode my honda 350 all over the hills and forests of Ft Lewis, and took the private pilots course at Grey army airfield. In those days, Madigan and Letterman were the old world war I type hospitals with two story buildings all connected with corridors, I found sweeper bristle on the road when walking to the airfield and made picks.

Just a question, does jacknife picks reduce the feel?

K: Yes. The feedback tends to be considerably less than that of a regular pick.

In this particular case we're talking about rocker picks, and feel doesnt matter so much with them. Most of the feel comes from the tension wrench, and a well made jacknife will also give sufficent feedback.

SFGOON,
Grew up nearby then assigned to 9th ID. Did a little TDY over at group, made some friends, keep in touch, you know how it is. I went to UW, too, way back in '85 or '86 on an extension program with Johns Hopkins.
NBC eh? I imagine that's an in demand field right now.
Any luck on your jackknife idea?
Thank you,
J Kehoe
