And the pry bar goes flying...

Postby Doobner » 25 May 2020 9:38

Just having an issue with my actually Sparrows brand pry bar style turning tool. I have a range of them, usually using the heavy bar with the rounded corners. Anyways, sometimes, when I get the opening click, the bar goes flying, and I have to look closely at the multi colored rug to find it. It doesn’t always happen, but very annoying when it does. Thinking of making a lanyard of some kind one end secured to the wrist, the other to the middle of the bar. I am expecting to hear that I am using too much tension, and maybe that is true sometimes. But the lock opens most of the time, I am still working with the 2 and 3 pinned progressive training locks from Sparrows. But that probably doesn’t really matter with this issue. Is this a common issue? Have you actually made a lanyard like this? Any other thoughts?

Sounds like too much tension to me...

Ok, noted. Thanks. It is kind of weird how sometimes it rotates slower and further and the tool stays put. Or it hardly turns at all and the bar flies. TOK is still kind of tricky to me, seems like a fair amount of tension is required just to keep the bar from falling out. I suppose this is a total noob issue, but I had to ask. :)

Try different thicknesses and they make some TOK’s with a kind of “grip” like teeth

Ok. The one that I am using is one of the 2 thickest ones From Sparrows, that would be a .50, I believe. Also it has some teeth on the inside edge. Is thicker or thinner better in this situation? I have some thinner bars, too, but have hardly used them. Not sure if it would be worth it to buy some of the Peterson’s pry bars or not, I have been assuming that it wouldn’t make much of a difference, at least if they are of the same thickness. Not sure if I could fit a tool larger than mine in the key way, just checked, and there is very, very little wiggle room. Maybe I should just chalk it up to something I will just need to keep practicing to learn. I appreciate your input!

I would use the thicker ones so you have more control and I would think it’s less likely they would go flying...
Sure thing!
