ABUS Doubtful Quality?

Postby ausGeoff » 8 Jun 2020 19:44

As a rank newbie, I wanted a couple of practise locks in order to move up from the typical clear plastic padlock
that I purchased with my first pick set. I've been reading a lot of LPL and BosnianBill comments, and I assumed
that ABUS was recognised as a reasonably competent manufacturer.

I understand that this possibly(?) only applies to their more expensive locks, but I'm on a limited budget so I bought
a little ABUS 84/40 padlock. And was I disappointed. I actually opened it within the first 60 seconds of raking, and
not much longer for SPP with a shallow hook. Its key has fairly regular bitting with no major highs or lows, but not
any particularly identical depths.

So... have I wasted my money for a "practice" lock? Is this one a once-off faulty lock? Or is ABUS overrated as a name
to trust? To my way of thinking, any so-called quality brand should cause more grief for any newbie picker LOL.

Or is it possible that this is a cheap Asian knock-off? There's no country of origin either on the lock itself, the keys,
or the box.

Some bittings are easier than others. Abus makes a decent lock, but if the lock is inexpensive, then it is probably not of the highest quality. Abus makes some really cheap locks, and some really good locks. Browse ebay, yard sales, Craigslist, thrift stores and any other place you can think of. That and trading are the best ways of buying locks on a budget.

Thanks Gordon. It was only $12 delivered so I guess I shouldn't expect too much for that price.
