Is this a Mosler No.5?

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Is this a Mosler No.5?

Does the geared friction fence make this Mosler lock a No.5?

The reason I ask is because the wheel pack/curb looks different than other No.5s I've seen- more like a No.6, which is not geared, from what I understand. Did the same model lock go through several changes in wheel pack configurations? Specifically, the number and locations of attaching screws, and the casting of the curb? The other 3-wheel curbs I've seen have the wheels resting on a raised boss with bayonet grooves and attached with a single screw, or the wheels resting on a raised center hub and the curb attached with two screws orientated lengthwise with the case.

This particular one has the wheels at the back of a flat curb which attaches with two screws orientated across the lock case. Is this just a variation of the No.5, or a different model altogether?

The difference between a 5 and a 6 is IMHO, that the 5 has a true friction fence and the 6 has a spring loaded roller fence. The 6 has for this a sprung pin in the bolt, if I remember it correctly. There have been photos either here or on keypicking with one. In the catalogues the fence mechanism is not mentioned and not visible.

Because of the decoration of your lock it has to be quite old. It is different from my 5, but I believe your's is a 5 too, because I don't have a better number for it. I don't have mine here at the moment. HPC manual says "Case size 3 5/16" high, 4 7/16" wide, 1 7/16" deep".

Left Right Left, that's a beautiful lock! so clean and shiny!

This winter, on those cold snowy New England days, I will have to pull out all my friction fence locks and give them a nice cleaning.

If I have any spare parts to give/trade/sell, I will let you know.

Thanks for sharing,

Thank you all for the compliments. It is a beautiful lock, but I didn't see that coming. I generally use Johnson's paste wax to clean, polish and seal brass lock cases. And, thank you for the offer squelchtone. This particular one is complete, but once in a while I do need a part or two.

That's what I've seen too. So, I guess the wheel curb had several variations for the same model of lock. It looks like I'll be calling this a No.5 then. Thanks.
