Christina is a long term member of Toool where she shows some of her pick designs and networks with the locksport community

She designs picks using her university level knowledge of physics and metallurgy .

editing is turned off for a simple reason, people in the past would get in a flame war, call each other nasty names, then edit their commentary before a mod came around to see it and ban them.

I'd like to turn Edit on for something reasonable like 30 minutes so folks can fix image links, add anything they forgot to add or include, correct spelling mistakes, etc, but to do this would require a bunch of setting changes per each sub forum individually.. I did it for one or two of the sub forums a while back, but it was a not a fun process.

Lastly, in response to an email question, I also wonder sometimes why Christina's designs are considered so good.

Here is what I was told when I asked why Christina's are so good.

*Autodesk Inventor was chosen for support for equation curves and G² smoothness bridge curves, which are lacking in Fusion 360.

* Each pick profile is fully constrained, with minimal stress concentration, in 3 different thicknesses

* Corresponding shaft tapers to compensate for the difference in thickness, in accordance with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory

* Tested with finite element analysis,

* Two Mathematica files that calculate appropriate wave rake undercut equation curves for maximum strength

Sadly I admit I am quoting what seems like gibberish to me.

Maybe some who understands this material can PLEASE comment on the validity of these comments.

I did read some of the articles of Ms. Palmer's design. What was not explained--or perhaps I just overlooked it--is how these designs create a higher likelihood of opening a 5-pin tumber or 6-pin tumbler lock. What movements to they impart to the pins which makes them "better" at opening locks? Because they have more bumps?
I believe technique and proper tension is still going to be a determining factor in get final opening.
But empirical testing is probably not possible because there are far too many variable--even from one lock to the next in a production line.

Absolutely 100 percent correct. There are too many myths about the CIA level magic tool that enables anyone to easily open any lock.

I see new bright dazzling shiny magic wands with claims I am too uneducated to evaluate.

I would still like to have a pick that is optimized for the job helping me.

Rightly or wrongly my belief is that some engineers and experts understand how a given pick design will interact with the pins and design of the lock making it easier to use proper technique and tension. Is this wishful thinking?

A fair question is Does that make a real world difference? Am I being mislead by claims that sound good but are pure hype.

Complicating the matter is that highly skilled pickers with a proven record are claiming greatly improved results. The have excellent technique and tension and claim the improved design helps them open locks easier and in some cases locks that would not be open able before.

Some of us need to hear the naysayers and critics. I am scared of spending $200 on junk. Please criticize all the claims to help newbies get some realistic perspective on whats real vs hype.

I also have doubts about the effectiveness. Saying that these waves are designed using Finite Element Analysis doesn't tell me anything--it's just computer modeling. A pick does not undergo extremes in forces which stress it that greatly. If a pick breaks, it is a disposable--we buy them packs of 5 or 10. I fail to see a true advantage. Ms. Palmer's engineering seems primarily a study to reduce pick breakage, not increase the likelihood of a 7-pin lock actually opening.

Yet, I would be curious to learn... whether the waves were modeled again a Sargent .020", Yale .019" increments, Schlage .015", or some European version to increase the mathematical likelihood of an individual pin (or all pins) aligning at the sheer line.

This comment is not to take away from the picks themselves. I do intend to buy some. They look very nice and appear well made. My spidey-sense tells all tingely when I see a lot of engineering terms used which we don't necessarily understand. I suspect my pipe wrench was also designed with similar engineering methods prior to production.

I am resurrecting this old thread.
I broke down and bought a set of Christina Palmer's "Necessary Nine" from TOOOL. They are a gift to my daughter.
The main reason was to inspire my daughter to continue her studies in physics--and show her that females in science and technology can do some very interesting things.
I am interested to review them when I get them in my hand.

I personally found that they worked better for me.

Someone told me that belief and expectation sometimes can contribute to improved results. I believe they excellent reviews from experienced pickers.

I personally received a lot of explanation and answers to questions when I emailed Christiana a while back.

Unfortunately the physics and math theory involved was at university level and I was stuck at grade 5 science.
