Lock Identification

Postby ssashton » 19 Dec 2020 8:50

Hi!

I just got my first beginners lock pick set today for some entertainment over xmas.

I managed to do the locks that came with the picks but when I tried to do the cheap padlock on my shed, I'm having difficulty.

I can't tension the core, the front plate just spins.

Please help me identify this lock type and where can I learn to pick it, please?

That is a warded lock. To pick it, you should get a warded lock pick set.

The picks you received are most likely pin tumbler picks. That lock has no pins. It has plates of steel that must be avoided while other parts press on a spring or two to push them out of the notches in the shackle that keep it closed.

A friendly word of advice, don't pick locks that are in use. It's far to easy to damage a lock in attempting to pick it. Better to pick up locks from a swap meet, a used hardware store, or garage sale for practice. You might also check with your neighborhood lock shop to see if they have old locks with no keys, or your local gym (they might have cut locks off lockers), or your local storage facility.
It's a good day when I learn something new.
