Kwikset SC1 Keyway Rekey and Reset

Postby GWiens2001 » 9 Sep 2021 19:40

Just got a core today that has been hard to find today. It is a replacement cylinder for a Kwikset Smartkey, but this one has the SC1 keyway.

Image

Note that the rekey tool hole is on the opposite side of the keyway than with the KW1 keyway SmartKey cores:

Image

The original KW1 SmartKey rekey tool would work, though the tools came with this one:

Image

However, this core uses completely different tools to reset the core if the working key is lost. No reset cradle is made for this lock. The Better Resetter tool DOES work with this core, but you must use the Kwikset SmartKey side. It is a little fiddly, but it does work.

Here are the tools made by Kwikset for this core:

Image

To rekey the lock, put the key fully into the lock. It is NOT necessary to remove the core from the housing to do this.

Image

Turn the key counter-clockwise (anti-clockwise) 90 degrees, putting the rekey hole at the top.

Image

Insert the rekey tool, and push it firmly in all the way.

Image

Image

Remove the reset tool, then remove the key by pulling it out without turning it.

Image

Image

Image

Insert the new key.

Image

Turn it clockwise and remove it when it is in the removal position.

Image

Image

The core is now rekeyed.

Now, how to reset the core if the original key is lost or is no longer working. First, remove the core from the lock. Turn it upside down (with the “pins” at the bottom of the keyway and the rekey hole to the left of the keyway.

Image

If you look at the bottom of the cylinder, it will look like this:

Image

You will need an SC1 Blank. The reset kit comes with a Kwikset SC1, but any SC1 blank will work.

Image

Insert the blank fully. Be sure it is fully inserted.

Image

This is your new friend, the SC1 SmartKey Reset Tool.

Image

Image

With the key blank inserted, place the reset tool on the core with the prongs on the left side, in the holes.

Image

Hold the reset tool firmly on the core while you remove the key blank.

Image

Image

While holding the core and tool together, rotate the tool to the right on the core until it stops.

Image

Remove the tool.

Image

If you look at the front of the plug, you will notice that the keyway reset is off center.

Image

Turn the plug in the housing until the change key hole is at the bottom of the housing (which is currently at the top of the picture due to how the tool is used).

Image

If you look closely at the keyway to cylinder orientation, the keyway lines up with the flats on the sides of the core.

Image

Now do the rekey procedure as above. Put the rekey tool in the hole.

Image

Push it fully and firmly in all the way.

Image

Image

Before and after shots of the gaps at the bottom of the core when the rekey tool is used:

After:

Image

Now put in the key fully and turn it to the removal position.

Image

Image

And the core with the lost or non-working key is now working!

Hope this helps some people out.

Gordon, you made another GREAT tutorial! It's very well written, carefully explained and with a lot of useful pictures. I'm sure it will be useful to many people.

Cheers :)

Yes very cool and well explanatory. I will definitely learn from this nice cool looking Kwikset lock
my neighbors still using the regular basic one, which is to the left instead to the right
is easier to rekey since you don't have to remove the core from the lock, this is a picture of the SmartKey Kwikset

You do not need to remove the core from the lock to rekey. You only need to remove the core from the lock if the key is lost or not working.

The only reason the core is removed from the lock assembly in the pictures in my post is because I ordered the spare core.

Maybe I should have a little fun and swap out one of the two cores in a Kwikset Key Control deadbolt in Ye Olde Collection. The Key Control SmartKey, for those who are not familiar with it, is a bicentric SmartKey deadbolt. It is the only way they can master key a SmartKey for apartments. I can have one that has Kwikset KW1 key for the main core and a Schlage SC1 key for the master key. Not that the lock has ever been installed.

That would actually be a decent idea if someone has an apartment complex with the Key Control deadbolts.

Good Work, was given a Kwikset Cradle Reset Tool at a Security Expo. But For me, just as easy to take further apart, Align the groove, push the slide, Insert one of my keys. Then can be reused. Have you tried Resetting without the tool?
Never tried a Comb Pick, but feel one could be used as a
Resetter, have you tried that?

Believe it or not, I found them at Foley Belsaw. Both the cores and the tool. Couldn’t find them anywhere else back then.

Last time I tried to install an SC-1 core into a Kwikset Smart Key housing, it refused to go in all the way. Later on I noticed the key had to be in the core or one of the tumblers was blocking the core from seating fully into the housing

Really good tip, Bill. Still have not installed this core, so have not come across that concern. But am sure I will come across it sooner or later.
