DIY top-of-keyway tension tools from (hardwood floor?) nails

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

DIY top-of-keyway tension tools from (hardwood floor?) nails

Postby prevariikation » 11 Jan 2023 15:06

Some cheap TOK tension tools I made starting with hardwood floor nails, using only a file. I found the nails in a thrift store, so hopefully not too uncommon. (I made the same post on LPU but I wanted to copy it here as well since these forums are much more searchable.)

Image
Sizes left to right: 0.060" unmodified, 0.045", 0.040", and 0.037". I've found the 0.060" fits well in Kwikset/Schlage keyways, the 0.045" is good for Master and many other padlocks, the 0.040" and 0.037" for cheap paracentric padlocks. Sizes were measured with a caliper but it's easy to just file to fit ;)

These won't reach into recessed keyways like you'll find in American locks, but have been good paired with a commercial 0.050" TOK tool, and got me started learning TOK tensioning :)

Great idea! How long are those nails?

Cheers :)

Not very long, only about 2". Definitely not the most ergonomic solution, just the cheap one!

A bit short for my style, but it could work well in a pinch.
And then, as Gordon pointed out, is very easy to carry.

Cheers :)
