Well, there's more than one issue w this Star safe lid. Looking at the photo below, the relocker bolts are captive, and cannot be removed. I've tried pulling them out, and they won't come. The diagram shows they are held in by some tab or detente.

The safe has cut-outs in the lid, that match the top of the fence and other lock parts. Because of the relockers, the fence isn't moving far enough to match the cut outs, so the lid can't be screwed on in the correct position.

I keep trying to attack the problem in a different way, but no solution is coming up. Perhaps in it's life some parts were replaced with incorrect ones. I don't know.

Finally got it. The lock's moveable base plate wasn't returning all the way, making it impossible to correctly assemble it. I had to quite strongly "help" the base plate return all the way, overcoming some scars in the metal, and then everything went together and worked.

There's four ways for the base plate to go in; two wrong ways, one right way, and one false "right way." Unless the springs return the base plate all the way, then the right way doesn't work, making it difficult to recognize the correct position.

Thank you forum,
Joe

It's true, I had to learn the hard way many times to mark where things are before taking them all apart . Important thing is that you got it working

Great, that you got all going again, Joe! And hopefully it will also help the next one with a Star with issues.

Hello,
Long time reader, first time poster. I am trying to fully disassemble and clean a very gunky AMSEC floor safe head. I am having trouble removing the spring driven retractor bolts in the photo. I can press on them and they move up and down, but something is holding them in. Anyone able to help me? Thanks!

If you have already removed the bolts, you probably need some solvent to eat that sticky grease. I like to use brake cleaner
