Broken door lock, can't find the fix or replacement

Hi,

I have a door with a lock that the latch will retract as normal with the handle but then not extend again. I can't see anything broken or apparently missing so have no idea how to fix it and I can't find another to replace it. The door has a metal frame so it's not easy to fit a different one.

I'm hoping someone here may be able to help.

All pictures reported as 'service unavailable'. If the springbolt will not jump out again after being withdrawn, probably a spring is broken. Or just possibly something is bent and jamming it, but nothing can yet be seen.

All the pictures are working for me. I've not seen this lock before, wish I had it in my hands so I could trouble shoot it. The biggest thing that sticks out to me is in the 2nd picture. Right above the brass piece that works the deadbolt and right below the longer silver piece that works the latch there is a metal wire looking piece that looks out of place... maybe something to do with that?

There must be a strong spring to throw out the latchbolt when withdrawn. Is that coil spring broken? That is the first spring, to restore the handle when depressed; does it return the handle to level?
Did the latch suddenly stop working, or gradually? I'm expecting another spring also to support the latchbolt, but i see no witness marks where a spring was, and no broken parts. I'm expecting a coiled round wire spring with two V ends. It might fit around the screw pillar above the latch, with one long limb pressing against the back of the latchbolt, and the other, shorter, end against the lockcase at the top, or just possibly against the stump on the spindle follower. But if so, there should be some witness marks. And where has the old broken spring gone? Or was this used solely as a deadlock, with the latch already disabled by removing its spring?

I think I know which bit you mean and I'm not certain what that piece is.

The handle works fine, it fits through the square in the centre and is returned by the spring in the centre movng the brass piece with the square hole. That piece retracts the latch but doesn't return it.

There is a spring on the post to the left of the square hole, with only one end on (pointing down and to the left in the pictures), which I was thinking must have something to do with it but couldn't find any marks or a missing piece. I think I'll have to take it out again for another close up look, maybe cleaning a few pieces in the process. There is a similar lock on another door which is showing problems now as well. I might take them both out for a comparison.

Can you manually push the latch out with your fingers? Or is it jammed up?

Looks like you have a 50mm backset, you'll need to measure the backset

Hi Bill, the lock in your link is missing the latch. It only has the bolt. So it's not the correct replacement for OP lock.

Yeah but now the guy knows he's looking for a Union mortise lockset, entry function...

It moves freely when pushed.

If it's so easy, I wonder why there are any locksmiths?
