In interested in the fact that of all the posts so far , what 50 odd so far ? Our poster posted twice ? Odd , i would think , no ?
Anyway if it's for real , and i am suspicious , then on the computer front!
You could use Mandrake a form of LInux as mentioned , however if your a non tecchie as you say you are then forget it !
If you have Windows then get a good firewall and antivirus package , Sygate for the firewall and NOD32 for the anti virus .
If your on ADSL then consider a hardware firewall also , not that dear and well worth it .
If your OS is less than Windows 2000 then ditch it !
To eliminate the potential for this guy to hack your computer id do :
Format your hard disk , and reinstall your OS . Of course you back up your important data first.
After reinstalling , first thing you do is install your new Anti virus protection. your firewall, and go and update the OS.
You password protect everthing , so when you fire up your computer it's got a password .
You password protect the default Admin account.
You password protect all your mail accounts , and any accounts you have with a "proper" password .
Do not use any word found in any dictonary , or in common usage . These can be broken.
Instead you create a password like this:
I would like 2 shoot this dude !!
This gives you the password using the first letter in the phrase ,
I w l 2 s t d ! ! , it's easy to remember and almost impossible to crack , would take weeks or more on a computer just to try crack that . It's as good as impossible to crack.
You need a combination of letters and numbers and special characters , hence the 2 and the ! mark .
Change your password at least once a month , if someone took the time to crack that , they will find it's uselless
Always keep your OS up to date , and your AV and firewall .
Its more than likely that the perp is gaining access to your computer while in your apartment , it's a tad more difficult to break into a selected computer on the net than you may think.
So also password protect the BIOS of your computer , if you hit F1 ( usually ) on your computer at startup you will enter the BIOS .
This can be password protected , this stops someone getting past , making it harder to break in to .
If you have physical access to a computer it's virtually impossible to prevent a break in, consider an external HD for storing your info one that is USB is easy to remove and hide.
You could use this to store all your info that he may be accessing . You can also make this drive password protected .
Or , get rid of the damm computer and get a pidgion instead , they don't crash
As much !
