no, the law doesn't apply equally to all, because depending on what state you're in, the law is completely different. you can't get away with something in say NY or CA that you can in TX.

Actually, the law does equally apply to all. It may not be the same law and ruling in every area, there is not one place where the law is not excluded from individuals.

This is getting off topic. Stalked is asking for locks and devices that would allow him to catch his intruder.

Why not set up some booby traps in your house? Besides an alarm. Maybe some wire-tripping of some kind? A cage is far too large, but perhaps something that would paint or disarm the suspect? Like wire/alarm triggered mace?

Mace however does carry, and you entering your home may very well disable you, but at least the suspect would create a ruckes leaving the scene. Go for MacGyver techniques. Don't tell us what you're going to use, nor agree with what we say. Lockmistress is right: if your intruder has access to your comp, then history will easily show how often you visit this site. And he'll read our posts.

But on a side note: this is weird. I've never heard of anything like this.

Good luck.

if i REALLY thought someone was picking my door to get into my home... then i'd find a lock they probably have little to know experience with...

like an Abloy (recommended), a Miwa, or a Mul-T-Lock. downside is, they are hard to find here in the states, will probably have to call a locksmith a few states away and have them shipped to you.

Personally, I think the whole gun and weapons issue should be no longer discussed on any forum here. This always results in mixed emotions. I am one of the most pro firearm people you will ever meet. I am a very capable small and largebore rifle marksman. I am very capable of being on target from(within 1 MOA) 0 to 1000 yards with some of my rifles. I am ok with a pistol, nothing to write home about. I personally keep a benelli m1 enty 12ga beside the bed. It is loaded with 2 rounds of beanbag followed by an 8 shot load, then 2 slugs. I figure if someone breaks in they will see my intimidating shotgun and leave. If they try to attack they are met with a bean bag(non leathal). If they get up and move toward me and not the door then it is 1 more. After that, you know the rest. In my area meth is a big deal and people are getting shot over anhydrous. I for one will not stand to have my family threatened by one of these freaks but I am not going to blast anyone who walks in my front door.

Honestly Zeke, I totally agree with you. This is a lock picking site, and weapons are a controversy that is outside the intended realms of discussion. Add the fact that very few in the world are qualified to give expert advice on the use of weapons to defend the home and it just makes sense. You're not going to hurt anybody messing with locks - firearms are a whole different ballgame.

On a lighter note you can only hurt yourself picking locks, I pinched my fingers in a padlock the other day and bled like a stuck pig.

I hurt myself by having the silly habit of holding picks in my mouth (some would say it's big enough to hold an entire toolbox).

One day I held one of the HPC 2000 series extractors in my mouth and pulled it out along with a bit of the inside of my cheek.

Now I put the handles in my mouth
sledgehammers make excellent back up picks!

In interested in the fact that of all the posts so far , what 50 odd so far ? Our poster posted twice ? Odd , i would think , no ?

Anyway if it's for real , and i am suspicious , then on the computer front!
You could use Mandrake a form of LInux as mentioned , however if your a non tecchie as you say you are then forget it !
If you have Windows then get a good firewall and antivirus package , Sygate for the firewall and NOD32 for the anti virus .
If your on ADSL then consider a hardware firewall also , not that dear and well worth it .

If your OS is less than Windows 2000 then ditch it !

To eliminate the potential for this guy to hack your computer id do :
Format your hard disk , and reinstall your OS . Of course you back up your important data first.
After reinstalling , first thing you do is install your new Anti virus protection. your firewall, and go and update the OS.

You password protect everthing , so when you fire up your computer it's got a password .
You password protect the default Admin account.
You password protect all your mail accounts , and any accounts you have with a "proper" password .

Do not use any word found in any dictonary , or in common usage . These can be broken.
Instead you create a password like this:

I would like 2 shoot this dude !!

This gives you the password using the first letter in the phrase ,

I w l 2 s t d ! ! , it's easy to remember and almost impossible to crack , would take weeks or more on a computer just to try crack that . It's as good as impossible to crack.
You need a combination of letters and numbers and special characters , hence the 2 and the ! mark .

Change your password at least once a month , if someone took the time to crack that , they will find it's uselless :-)

Always keep your OS up to date , and your AV and firewall .
Its more than likely that the perp is gaining access to your computer while in your apartment , it's a tad more difficult to break into a selected computer on the net than you may think.

So also password protect the BIOS of your computer , if you hit F1 ( usually ) on your computer at startup you will enter the BIOS .
This can be password protected , this stops someone getting past , making it harder to break in to .

If you have physical access to a computer it's virtually impossible to prevent a break in, consider an external HD for storing your info one that is USB is easy to remove and hide.
You could use this to store all your info that he may be accessing . You can also make this drive password protected .

Or , get rid of the damm computer and get a pidgion instead , they don't crash :-)
As much !

If I were having this problem I would put Medeco locks on my doors and locks on all of my windows. Get the big dog, just feed him inside your house. No outside food. If someone gets close enough to poison your dog I don't think that person will just walk away after doggie gets done with him. You can hook up you lights in the house to turn on with noise or with a sensor. Set up the lights just inside the door to turn on when the door is opened and get a motion activated camera to take a picture of who walks through the door. It's cheaper than a video camera, but only by a little. The video camera is better, if you can afford it. The lights turning on will be a deterrent and you wouldn't need a flash to go of on the camera. Keep all lights in really dark place on when you go out. Like laundry rooms, bathroom and so on. This will also be a deterrent but also serves to let you see what's turned off when you get home and see into those dark places people could be hiding. If those lights are off approach carefully and keep an ultrasonic beeper with you and some mace. So far all you say is that the person is stealing things, but even Ted Bundy didn't just start off killing people. Just my two cents. BTW, I smell BS

The best idea i have had on this problem is also the cheapest,

Get one or more of those trip wires that once tripped set off a blank shotgun cartridge,

When/if someone gets in your house and sets one off, they will think someone is shooting at them and run off, all the neibours will hear the shots and look to see someone running away then in turn will ring the police,

You could also follow the brown stains down the road to find the culprit
