I have a major problem here. My brother just bought a 91 MR2 a couple days ago and while he was trying to open the trunk today, the lock body got forced further into the trunk door and now we cant open it. I think the rear of the lock got jammed in something because the lock wont turn but we can hear the linkage responding when you pull the trunk release lever so im guessing the linkage was knocked off. There is pretty much no way of getting in there like from behind the drivers seat cos the engine is in the way since its a mid engine vehicle. Ive never ran into a situation like this in the past and have no idea what i can do to get this trunk open. any ideas? (he has his backpack and all his school books in there too)

I really don't know what to make of "the lock body got forced further into the trunk door"? That is not something that typically happens to locks when you try to open them.

If it were my car, I would drive it to the nearest Toyota dealer and ask them to help. I'm sure they would oblige.

I'm with MrB on this one. That's probably a better move than trying to mess with the lock yourself. You could possibly make it worse. If the dealer says it'll have to be replaced, then by all means try to fix it. It could be an easy fix, though, so I'd visit the dealer before attempting anything.

My guess is that the support metal around the lock rotted away and the lock simply fell "forward", but then again this is just a guess since you are on the left coast and I am on the right one.

The safest bet is take it to a dealership and let them have a go at it, but if the car is only worth $$$ then you might consider pulling the lock, and then repairing what ever is damaged and then installing a new one.

If he has just bought it, and it was from a dealer, surley there must be a warranty or somthing on the vehicle,

Try putting a little hook in the lock and pulling it back out, once out you can hold the body with pliers or somthing and then open the lock,

If the lock has fully gone in the body you should be able to see the linkage that the lock moved, if this is so pull,push,lever the linkage in the direction it moves and the boot should open.

I thought the MR2 is a rear engined vehicle! They dont have a keyway on the trunk! So the trunk is at the front!
Please forgive me if im wrong here!
Get a mate to push down on the trunk and activate the inside lever!

Nope, im wrong! they have a little trunk! You can access the mechanism from underneath, you will need some long nose pliers as you have to work in a very very tight space!

Well my mechanics got it open a week or so ago. would have called a locksmith but pretty much all of them dont work on sundays nor do they do automotive lock work when i called to check. They said that one disk wafer got jammed and a linkange poped off the rear of the lock body. We got it re-pinned with a new code cut key and it worked, for a while. The lock and the linkage broke off again from where they were supposed to stay so we gotta take apart the rear light assembly to try to open the trunk with a plier one more time.
