:D This is my first post here..I got interested in lock picking about a week ago and have been reading up on it on the internet and the 101 posts.. yesterday I made a tension tool and a small diamond tip pick out of some old scroll saw blades. cut a small slit in a wood dowel for the pick handle. I then selected 2 cheap padlocks, a display case lock, an in handle door lock and a deadbolt lock to practice on. I have had success with 3 of the 5 so far. the ones with no success are the deadbolt with no brand name on it, but the key way seems very wide and I think my pick may be too thin for it. And the display case lock also no name brand on it but the keyway in this lock is very thin and the pins seem very long. I will keep trying on these but any advice will be welcomed

Good job on picking your first locks. It would probably be a good idea to buy a lock pick set. Use that as a learner set, then you can also use them as a template to make more picks if you want.

CONGRATS... feels good doesn't it.

some advice. Sounds like you are doing goon on not picking one lock to learn on but multiple, way to go on that that is the way to do it. also i don't think picks can really be too thin more so the other way around they can be too thick some times. you just need to be able to keep the pick from turning in the key way but it may help to have some thicker ones. i agree that you should maybe buy some practice picks because they will be great templates as well as starter picks and give you an opertunity to learn about different heads or tips how ever you would like to call them.

As for havening one wrench... (maybe you have more then that) it is a good idea to have several and with several thicknesses (not the thickness of the medal but of the part that you insert into the lock) because i have leaned that is some smaller constrictive keyways it is inportant to have as much pickspace as possible. This is something that i also need to do.

Along with the diamond pick (i prefer the half diamond) you should also have a hook. I think those are the most important two to have. and just keep at it learning to pick is like any orther sport or skill the only way to get good is to practice and challenge yourself.

Happy picking

here is what i think about that kind of stuff... (just personal opinion)

you should learn to pick pin by pin and then learn to rake and then pick guns then electric and so forth. if you don't understand what the gun or electric is trying to accomplich it is just luck when you get it. Luck will only get you so far in life and eventually you will need skill and you learn that my doing it the hard way first and moving to the easier. You can do what you would like to that is just my advice to you. and i really don't know much about jiggers so i can't help you out in that area.

good luck to you
