It took me about 20 seconds my first time.

However...it went something like this.

-pick pick pick pick...snap-

-hurls body at door multiple times-

The next time, when I wasn't using my friend's trashy brittle picks, it took me about two minutes using a bent saftey pin and a small bent screwdriver.

The problem I have now is that I am worse that in the beginning. I'll work on this same lock for over an hour an never get it open. Over the last few days I have opened it once. It seems like I have been going backwards instead of forwards.

Any ideas on this problem? Anyone lese go thru the 1-step forward, 2-steps back routine?

my first lock was this absolutely tiny suitcase lock the day i bought my picks in america, for a rough measure, the part of the key that fits in the lock is a little bit smaller than a letter key on the keyboard! first time i touched it with a pick it wouldn't open then i realised how you actually picked and got it straight away, within 10mins it opened at the sight of a pick!

My first lock was the cigarette cases at work. Someone lost the keys. I had one open in about 20 minutes with two paper clips.

Master locks are funny. Sometimes they are easy to open with clockwise tension; sometimes they are a lot easier with counterclockwise tension. Even the same lock seems to change its personality. Give reverse tension a try; may make your life a lot easier.

The first lock I probably bit off more than I could chew. It was my friend's house deadbolt. I tried for probably 20 mintues with no luck. So I went and practiced on this 4 pin filing cabinet my parents have and got my time down to under 2 minutes, went back to my friend's a few days later and picked it in probably 10-15 minutes.

Very first time I tried I couldn't do it. I tried again about a minute later. 10 minutes later I had it picked. Next time it only took me 7 :)

tut tut, basic rules of lockpicking here... never pick a lock you rely on!

picking can damage the lock internally, it weakens springs, damages pins and lock plugs and hulls. thats why you only pick a lock you bought for picking, because it doesnt matter :D

and if you snap off a pick in the lock and get it stuck, you dont want to have to do like someone else i read on here and drill out your lock and replace it, especially if your parents aren't to happy about your latest hobby...

The first lock took about a day for me, but I blame the circumstances  ...I had bought a good simple lock to pick from a visit to estonia (In Finland most locks are abloy-locks that are not so good practise for beginner-pickers) but even though the lock it self was easy (I found a lock that is about twice as big as pin-tumbler locks usually are) the problem was tools. I had had no chance of purhacing desent picks and I didn't have any good materials, so I ended up with bended paper clips
...If anyone has ever tried to pick a lock with paperclips, they know that a bent paper clip is crap  ...but to my great joy the lock did finally click after a day of hard work :D
(I should mention that that has been the first and the last time that I was able to open this lock with paper clips :? )
