I have seen the old public version of this and although very ngood was mainly geared towards the USA, is this still the case or would it be a good purchase for us UK lockies?

The securty.org site shows the cd's to be a supplement to the book, and for ordering it seems as though you are getting the book (220.00)with a preveiw cd. Where you can purchase the public, locksmith, gov't version of the cd.
It list the locksmith version as 350.00, gov't as 600.00. Is that 350.00 for the locksmith version the entire cost? As in the 220.00 book included.
Or is that price the cd only? As in 220.00 for the book, plus 350.00 for the cd.

The public disc has around 31000 pages so I hope you don't have a real old computer with a small hard drive.

No worries -- you can run everything off the CDs.

I was looking do download Lss+ cd, looked everywhere for it and I finally find it. It’s the preview version and u get like 3 days before it expires. After the three days are up you can just reinstall it. I was just wondering if anyone was able to download it to.

Unless you're downloading it from security.org, that is quite illegal. And since the version that's "out there" is quite old, you miss out on all the stuff that's been added to the discs since then.

Marc Tobias is not going to go under. He is principle attorney in his own firm and does primarily investigative work. I suggest you visit his websight at www.security.org. This guy is purely incredible to have authored LSS.

I wouldn't deny he's incredible but to suggest he "won't go under" is a bit naive I'm sure the BCCI and many other large corporations thought that. and despite going under business wise there always getting run over by a bus, heart attact etc. which of course I would not wish on anyone but are unfortunate realities of life and what assurances are there regarding continuation of support if he's no longer around? My golden rule is say no to machine specific registration, it's just too big a risk to take particularly with the sort of money he's asking.

While you should really ask Marc Tobias about this, I believe the publisher can also handle activations.

I bought the print version last year (2-volume public) and it is worth every dime.
It added a lot to my knowledge of locks in general as well as bypassing techniques. And after reading the section about manipulation I'll never use anything less than a Group 1-R lock on a safe or security file again. As a security admin, nothing scares me more than the possiblity of surreptitious access

I don't really like the "security through obscurity" strategy with LSS, only selling the "real deal" to locksmiths or government..

Call Marc Tobias if you want the locksmith version. Don't quote me on this, but I have a feeling he considers the serious hobbyist to be as qualified as a locksmith. The only way to be sure is to ask him.

The main value of Locksmith and Government over the Public version is the videos. If you're just getting into this stuff, the public version (or the book) is far more than you'll get through. I haven't made it through all the videos I have, and I've owned it a long time!

yeah, of course the MAIN thing is the book. But there's some stuff on the CDs (afaik) that would be of interest for me, too. Like the revised "Art Of Manipulation", on safe cracking, or, on the government version, the alarm stuff. I totally want to know everything about anything, though I might never use it anyway :]

Well me brudders an sisters, I up and did it... today I mailed off my money order for LSS... waiting is the difficult part now. I may well need to install drool cups when I read it so as not to mess up the pages. I will be springing for the locksmith version of the disks as well but that may be a little down the road; uh... well, maybe not that far down the road.

But, I have to say, EVERYBODY here MADE me do it!!! It's your (fault and) high speeches about it that convinced me that this is a very good investment into my own education. Yeah, it's 220 bucks + S&H (7.50) but really, that's a small price to pay for the kind of knowledge you have described this tome to contain.

I have learned a lot here although it's been a short time that I have been registerered. I work on picking every day at least a little bit or more. I have learned to take my time and not to get too frustrated when working on spools (sheesh, I didn't know there were 4 of them in that lock!) and how to make my self repin locks on a progressive basis when making the leap from basic pin tumblers to more secure ones. There is still much on this site for me to read and learn from all of you still though. I am sure that this book set will be worth my while.

In emailiing Marc Tobias, I found him to be quick to reply, professional (that was expected based on what everyone here said) considerate and very personable as well.

I am making the commitment to my self to study this (subject and book) as much as I can and study toward becoming a certified/licensed smith as well. I may not ever work as a smith, but I want to study it and get certified anyway, even if it doesn't pan out as full-time work.

So, if nothing else has come from your posts, you all have created a cohort in your fasinating hobby/profession... Your posts, photos, gasps and insights all contributed to that for me. Another job well done by all of you.

I have a hunch, if LSS were in liquid form, I would want to open up my skull and pour it into my brain...

as I've posted before, it's well worth it if your really serious. I was lucky enough to buy it direct from Mr. Tobias and have enjoyed it ever since. The knowledge per dollar value is quite high
