Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Schlage/kwikset Top pins

Postby jimt » 26 Apr 2005 19:57

So much info here, so little time..
Schlage/Kwikset door locks
Are the top pins for these locks always the same?
If not how do you determine what size pins to use?
Thanks

The lower pins change length and the upper pins stay the same length. Some high security locks like the almighty Medeco have varying upper pin lengths.

Thanks for the quick reply.
We use a 6 pin schlage lock.
Do all 6 pions need to be the same size
or does it matter what size?

For the upper pins, it really does not matter. The lock may perform better with normal sized upper pins though.

I've seen Schlages with and without different top pin lengths (compensated drivers?). It probably would be fine with one length though. I don't have a schlage keying manual so I cant give you specifics.

By the way, I have looked for a forum like this a

Thanks again!!

The kwikset lock (5 pin deadbolt) has the same top pins.

Most residential-type locks used "same-length" driver pins but it is not critical that they are. For all brands of locks there is a suggested length of maximum pin stack, and if you want to get super critical about it you can use "compensated drivers" to get that exact length.

However, as long as the spring is not being compressed to the point of damaging it there is really no need to be concerned about the length of the top pins.

Varying the length of the driver pins in a lock will change the pick feeling since more or less pressure will be placed on the spring at any time, and this in turn will transmit a different feeling while picking. If you have the pins, try swapping a few to see the difference.

This is just a passing thought but how common are security pins? I mean do you get them on a standard house deadbolt?

Security pins are not common on most residential locks unless:

1. The customer has requested it. (smirk)
2. The locksmith put them in (highly unlikely.)

Basically they are pretty rare.

But, for some reason they are strikingly common in padlocks, in many cases relatively cheap padlocks. I never could figure that out. I would think the same logic that applies to putting them in cheap padlocks would apply to residential deadbolts.

i know the really chap manufacturers put in security pins to help the security level of the lock a littl since the machining uality is so poor that they'd practically fall open if they didnt have the secuity pins, lol
