Security Pin

Hey people pritty new to this site but have been picking locks with a home made paper clip for 3 years now, well a whole range of them with a screw driver you can find in party crackers. I bought my first set not long ago and have been picking away at 6 pin tumbler locks and the odd wafer lock but keep hearing about these "security pins" and have tried looking it but have found nothing, its never bothered me in the past but if i want to understand the lock better and become mcuh faster and used to locks I am gonna need to know what it is and does, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

Search for terms such as "spool pin" and "mushroom pin". These are examples of security pins. In the most basic sense, security pins are pins (could be top or bottom pins) that have been modified to frustrate picking. Hope this sheds some light. Happy picking.

Security Pins

Postby barnzy » 7 May 2005 11:29

Thanks a lot man, just looked it up and read into them, basically much more difficult to pick, can't find any diagrams or anything of them as of yet though. But basically I think they make it sound as if the top pin has gone past the sheer line but really hasn't...think thats the basics of it.

There is a nice introduction chapter to sec. pins in the good ol' MIT guide. Give it read!

Pick

Postby barnzy » 7 May 2005 13:28

Hey pip, sorry but I have just been looking for it everywhere, picks are so hard to loose. But as you are interested I will give you a quick low down of what it looks like and how it was made. All i needed was a decent pair of pliers and two (large) paper clips, by large I mean EXTRA large, these can be found in offices or stationary stores, they are abnormally large. get the pair of pliers bend the first paper clip open, straight bit of wire, bend the front into a nose shape and leave. Get the second paper clip and straighten it, bend it round the other paper clip loads of times till u run out with the pliers, this is your handle. I used this pick for raking at first because i didn't no how to pick properly but as i said it served me well and I loved. Give it a go sometime, was a bit hard to make but after a few attempts I got it. I am interested with your signature, i like it, don't suppose you could make me could you

there are spools, mushrooms and serrated pins. Id have to say that serrated are the hardest but all of them make picking the lock more challeging

Yeah, just found a lock with a few mushroom pins in and boy was that difficult, much more difficult than i imagined, totally different from usual pins. I will look out for more of these :D
