some random thoughts ...

Postby wtf|pickproof? » 9 Jun 2005 8:08

nice to see some LP101 action on sf.net!

I'm studying CS with little experience in projectmanagement.

As for design-patterns, choose whatever you like just remember to keep focus on the interfaces.

Don't expect sf.net to do work for you, especially coding or gfx. Nobody will give a sh1t (excuse me) about your project, unless it's really highprofile. I think that's clear to almost all of you thou. Best place for recruiting coders, gfxers, .. is this website.

There are some errors on the project homepage (eg. the projectname now has 4 letters ;) ) and the logo is awesome.

If you need someone for testing, feedback, ... i'll be happy to offer my time and linux boxes.

Maybe I'll join the project in my summerhollidays, no promise on this.

just my 0,2 €

I love the idea and think it should be moved along, if were keeping this thread you need to start cutting and pasting a lot of the info already on there to this thread so it saves a lot of discussion time, if nothing else whitehats observations and suggestions should be copied over as they were good goals,

I would love it if you decided to carry that thread on though as 2 threads on the same thing seems a little pointless to be honest but this is personal and not official so you obviously do as you want and if thats to keep this thread then fine i shall not hold it agaisnt you or at least until we meet again one day :P jk

alright alright :) but can we at least change the title of this to reflect what it's about?

something like "opensource maskerkeying project" ?

And I tend to be of the same school of thought on the non-duplication of posts, not sure what I was thinking :)

dear God! it's alive!!!!!!

difference between now and then is I can now write C# to an average level as opposed to just being a database specialist.

still not interested in being the project lead - if someone want's to take it on -I'll help in anyway I can.

May the MACS be with you.

What language were people thinking of writing it in?

Assuming it is to be a standard GUI based application, rather than a webapp or similar I would have thought that C, C++, C#, and Java would be sensible choices, given both their features, and the number of developers familiar with them.

Personally I would recommend Java, as the cross platform nature (mono doesn't cut it yet for me) is essential for a project like this where most of the developers will probably run linux, and most of the users will probably run windows. The fact that you can download both the JDK and an IDE free of charge helps immensly as well.

There is even an opensource JAR -> EXE program http://jsmooth.sourceforge.net/ so the computer illiterate windows user can install Java apps with no problems.

I would personally go with a web app. Build up some nice free software, then pepper it with adverts and pay-for features that help fund further development.

oi, let's leave the peppering with advertisements out of it.

if there is a legitimate cost that needs to be recouped post it up here on LP101 and we'll see what we can do to raise funds.

In the meanwhile, if it is decided to go with web app, I'll happily provide the hosting for the project.

Webapp is good as well.

Personally, if it decided to go with either PHP or Java Servlets/JSP then I'm more than happy to help with some coding.

On the hosting front, I can't offer any space, but I do have a pair of geographically distant (250 miles between them) DNS servers that could be used.

As for peppering with adverts, I think that hosting and bandwith fees could do with recovering, but a fairer way to do that would to only allow people to download the zip/tar file of the webapp and make them host it themselves. That is of course if hosting gets prohibitively costly.
