Help with old lock

Postby mallorcajim » 18 Jul 2005 14:04

This site looks to have tons of information...that is why I am posting since I do not even know where to begin. I have a German Schrank my grandfather built in the 1920's. I have the original key and 2 copies. I was having trouble with one of the two locks which are identical. I took it apart and it was full of dirt that I drybrushed out. I put it back together, tested it several times and thought I had solved the problem. Unfortunately, the lock is now stuck and I cannot open the door. The key turns about half way and will not go any further. The lock had 3 metal strips of different lengths inside. I have tried lubricating the lock with graphite to no avail. The schrank is put together so that all pieces come together like a puzzle and there are special screws inside that hold it all together. It would be difficult and cause damage to the piece to try to get into the closet without using the door. I called some local locksmiths but the charge quite a bit and offer no guarantee that they will be able to open it. Any suggestions, as to what I can attempt on my own? Thanks in advance.

Hmm, i dont even know what a schrank is...mabye if you post some pictures of this "schrank" and the keys, you may get some more helpful replies. If you are really unable to post some pics, at least try to describe it in some detail.

It is an item of furniture, usually like a sideboard or display case for a house. Most I have seen are large, elaborate and well made.

As to the original posters question.

Are you sure you put all the pieces back in the right way?

Blacken the part of the key that goes into the lock (use a candle) and then gently try the key. See if there are any marks that would indicate where the lock is sticking.

From the description, it sounds like the key may be starting to turn, but then gets stuck trying to retract the bolt. If this is the case, I would expect the blackening to be marked on the top portion of the key furthest away from bow as this is normally the part that moves the bolt.

The locks in these cabinets are usually fairly simple lever style locks. Searching the forums here will give you alot more detailed information on these types of locks.

oil

put a couple drops of oil on those keys and wiggle them in the lock a bit. Oil is really amazing stuff, solves so many problems. 8)
