Decoding Schlage IC core

Postby wsbpress » 22 Aug 2005 14:19

I have a friend with a bunch of Schlage IC core cylinders without keys. These are not the Best SFIC format, but rather the kind with six pins and then a smaller diameter seventh pin used to remove the core. I was able to shim one open and decode the bottom pins with my calipers. I took the code to my friendly neighborhood locksmith and now have a working operating key.
My question is what do I need to do now to get a working control key?

If it's like the LFIC locks I've seen the control key is the same as the operating key but cut on the longer control blank.

Is this a special blank or just a seven pin blank with (or without) a cut on the seventh bit?

I belive it's a special blank, but you could probably make one from the 7 pin blank. I think if you look in the key blank catalog (ILCO??) they sometimes list things like 6.5 pin blanks. that's what you want.

Just file the shoulders back(on a blank key) to make a 7 pin blank and copy the working key onto it AND put a #6 depth cut in the 7th position. You now have a control key...

Thanks for the info.

Of course using a 7 pin blank with the regular six-pin code plus a #6 cut on the 7th position would work too, correct? Are all Schlage LFIC disassembly pins keyed to a #6 cut?
I guess I could also cut the six-pin code on a seven-pin blank and then file the 7th position until it works.
I've googled for info or a manual on the Schlage LFIC with no luck. Does anybody know of a link?
