Postby hp » 28 Aug 2005 21:37

i am just starting out at this and i want to make my first picks, but i don't know what one is good to start out with, i have access to grinding tools, and the skills to use them, but i am still not sure what to make, i have read up on how to pick the lock so i know that pretty well but any info on the pick would be helpful, thanks

PS. any tips on picking would still be nice

Generally, you'll want a hook, half diamond, or both, and in various sizes, for single pin picking. You may want to make some rakes if you're into that, I never did. Falle curve picks are extremely versatile (as I recently learned), so search for those; cracksman uploaded a picture with a ruler that's about to scale (I had to adjust it a bit, enlarged it by 10% in Paint to match up the ruler to scale with an inch). Don't forget to cut a few strips of metal for tension wrenches, a few of varying widths is always good.

hmm, I'm well i got a door nod lock to practice on so a single pin ones might not be the way to go, and i have read about a tension wrench but i have not found out what they are? is it like when you put a small flat head screw driver? :? i started out with a small allen wrench but it didnt work too well and i thought a proper tool would be better and i am not sure about a few of the names you listen a link to a pic would be helpful but only if it is not to much trouble

Personally i found a good hook to be the best to start with. I think my half diamond may have been crap. Also, i would say that a hook would be a little easier to make.

sorry for the double post, i should read more before i post.

basically a tension wrench is a flat bit of metal in a L shape that you stick in the bottom (usually) of the lock. It works like a bike pedal. If you use an allen key you need to flatten the head. there will be pictures on this site somewhere just have a quick look.

Gramatically speaking, that was a sentence, not a question.

You have a lot more reading to do, young padawan.

If you're 15 reading at the 3rd grade level, lock picking may not be the hobby for you.

I am also making a Falle-Safe adjustable tensioner. The plan still needs some refining, but I did most of the work by eye and with no directions or dimensions. I'll get the dimensions later from cracksman, and I'll write up a guide on how to make your own Falle-Safe tensioners. Here's how they look so far:

There are three types of thinking that people default to and use:

Visual-pictures
Auditory-sound
Kinesthetic-feelings

You can tell by your eye movements when you're thinking, and most people have one dominant and a secondary semi-dominant type, while the third lingers behind.

Up left and up right are visual, left is audio, right is kinesthetic, down left is audio, down right is kinesthetic (opposite for left handers (not in the vertical directions, just the left or right))

Those that are mainly auditory and kinesthetic are known to have trouble spelling, because they attempt to sound out the word in their head, and go phonetically.

You can train yourself to be a better speller by simply visualizing the word you're about to type or write, and it should help you in spelling

I've always been the third grader whom, when trying to find the reading level, got to words that the teacher didn't know.
