Italian lock... weird is all can say

Postby illusion » 8 Sep 2005 12:51

Whilst i was in italy i came across a weird lock... I haven't seen one really like it, but it was used in MANY places, it was even used in some high security places... now after browsing through a hardware store i found a blank key which looked like it could be used. either this is just a kind of warded lock, or possibly a double lever lock.... i really don't know!

this likely sounds bumb as hell, but u see new things every day :D

I don't think he saw the key :P

on a related note, a local lockie who also happensd to be a lock collector was showing me a picture of the key used to secure the enigma machines. Like the drawing but with 4 sides to it.

Postby raimundo » 9 Sep 2005 7:43

looks a bit like mottura, look at the chez/ monmartre site. Just google "serrures de haute securite'" and find the monmartre site. some of the pictures can be clicked on for expanded drawings :)

 ... these locks......... well to say they look complex would be putting it lightly... eek!

it's cool that the site is in french, being half french it makes for good reading
:D

i've got it... on houses they are 'double bitted lever locks' (being the wider keyway of the two i saw)

On the bank door the keyway was thinner which leads me to believe that it is indeed a mottura lock as raimundo poined out.

Awesome

The first question to ask is, are the two bits of the key the same size, and are they in a direct line? Next, are the bittings equidistant?

If the bittings are in a straight line, one side is a little larger than the other, and the bittings are equidistant, it is a common safe lock, normally one with 7 to 9 levers in it. They are common on small key safes right up to big safes, but rarely have anti-pick protection.

If the bittings are not equidistant, you might have two seperate rows of levers on a double bolt, and the two have to be moved at the same time for the bolt to move. These are normally 2* 7 levers, and are often very nasty inside, with things like spring-loaded levers, anti-picks, non-circular lever holes, etc. Used on bank vaults, etc. and I saw a lot on my recent trip to Holland. If the key isn't straight, you certainly have two separately bitted lever packs inside.

If you are just looking at the keyhole, some locks have a non-straight keyhole, and the key goes in at one side, and out the other after turning, and vice-versa. These are just like a normal single bitted key, and have various numbers of levers.

is this a well known kind of lock?is it safe? my front door has it so i would be glad if u guys could tell me!(im from italy)

P.S: can a bump key work for this kind of lock, and a EZ Snap Lock Pick Gun?

PIck guns or bump keys will not work for lever locks.
