I've never been to a lock picking competition so this might already be out there, but I was thinking that a HORSE style event might be fun. It would let people show some style apart from just getting the lock open (fast), for example - I can pick this lock behind my back, or one handed, or with a banana.
There might have to be some limit on the difficulty of the locks, maybe just that both competitors were able to open a given lock under normal conditions. Likewise there would have to be be agreements about tools - perhaps that tools must be shared upon request.
Oh, and Hello

Now that's skill!
Some things may be pick proof, but everything can be bypassed....

I can do my Masterlock 130 wiith my right hand alone, with my right hand alone. And all of that is while I am looking. I can do pick it without looking with my right hand, but my left hand I am having problems.
My mother always assist when I got a new lock, and when I get it open, I till her which pins bind, and wheter it's a little Masterlock 130, or a Masterlock No.5, she can pick them. I am so proud of her.

I also forgot the time I tied myself up to my kitchen table with a big metal chain and my Masterlock No.3 ( not much of a big deal), and managed to pick it without having my picks in my hands ( I had to get them in my pocket.)

I think it's a fantasitc idea, and will almost certainly adopt something of the type for a locksport meeting in the future. It actually got my creative juices flowing, so over the next couple days I'm sure a ton of ideas will come to me.
I would think that the actual difficulty of the lock is irrelevant. Perhaps a basic Kwikset or Weiser cylinder would be just fine. Something that, under normal conditions, would not be difficult to pick. But, with large fuzzy mitts on (there I go, thinking like a Cannuck again), or with your hands, tools, and lock submerged in a basin of water (I know, hard on the lock, but it is a Kwikset after all... get over it. ), picking lefthanded, picking while balancing on one foot (and if your foot touches down, you're eliminated), and I'm sure there are a whole lot more ideas that will come to me.
Thanks for the idea Gordon!

Pick a 5 pin Schlage w security pins.... drink a pint.
Pick a 6 pin Schlage no security pins..... pint.
Pick a 4 pin Master padlock....... pint.
Then try the Kwiksets

Hehe, I thought of this precicely because of a Kwickset which I know very well and was trying to challenge myself with. I can get it with a completely flat pick (upsidedown half diamond), I'm working on one-handed techniques and tensioning with my thumbnail. I can do my Masterlock 140 behind my back, which was harder than I'd thought.
