Joseph bates & sons patent lock

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Thats the clever part. The stump doesnt move. So your moving the levers up and down trying to find the gates. (6 levers). And what feels like the 7th lever is the sliding plate mechanism, which work independently of the play between levers, gates, and stump.

It has to shift the rectangular "second" stump, out of the "P" shaped slot at the the back,(plate moves not stump) before the tension can be put on the 6 levers to try picking.

Now heres the rub. 2 in 1 in, tension the bolt, wont move, cos the second, or back gate is in the p shaped slot. OK lets move that out of there, clunk thats it, lets get to picking the levers. No can do pick trapped.

So 6 levers interact with front bolt stump . Plate mech interacts with back stump in "P" shaped slot. If they dont both interact at the same time, ie with the turn of a key. Your not getting in.

sorry @kwoswalt99 you were right about the spring. I was fitting new springs to replace the broken ones on the levers and putting it all back together, ready to cut a new key, and seen my mistake.
Well spotted.
Thanks

i know i've seen this on a modern lock, but can't think which at the moment. what you'll find is that all locks of that type have the same back lever. so you can use a 2 in 1 where the tension leg is cut to move the bolt and set that first lever, then the picking arm will be free to do the other levers. having that lever with a small lift and small central space can prevent a plain 2 in 1 from working (as you've noticed) and stops over lifting attacks

Here is the new key cut for the lock showing the step hights. (I know I could have mixed it up a bit more)

And here is the assembled door, lock in place all working. Its had a repair, and the main box is away for shot blasting.

Heres the next stage in restoring the old box. Door repaired, and the whole thing shot blasted.

As every part is being stripped down ready for painting, you can really see the care thats went into each part. Each and every component that makes up the safe has its own matching serial number.

Well i guess this short video shows some pictures of the safe restoration as it went along, and the short clip, shows how the safe looks now.
For 99p Ive learned a lot, met new friends, and have a working antique safe from a bygone era of British manufacture, never to be seen again.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the video Squeltchtone. I feel their pain with that "empty" feeling inside. Do you thing the guy in the video, that was hitting it with the sledge hammer, was trying to free off rusted parts,? Or do you thing he was just pissed off at that stage.?

I'd like to think he could feel the bolt work want to retract but one of the bolts was rusted and he beat on it in order to loosen it up..
