Help Removing Cover Off Yale Indirect Drive

Postby djed » 3 May 2018 20:12

Please help with guidance on removing the cover plate on my Yale indirect drive lock.

I’ve dialed the proper open sequence and the lock is now in the open position. However I cannot seem to remove the cover from my lock. Any suggestions?

In my Yale 025 1/2, the cover pushes from the spindle side towards the bolt. This won’t work on this one. There is some play on one of the long sides but I don’t want to break anything so I thought I should ask.

Did you try taking the screw out first? Just kidding :P

Try using a small rubber mallet to gently tap on the edge of the lid spindle side to bolt to see if that moves it. Some covers are REALLY tight, I had one I needed to pry off with a screwdriver. If that doesn't wort try bolt to spindle.

Will try but a picture I found in the HPC safe & Vault manual suggests the lock won’t move laterally but must come straight up due to the wheel pack.

I agree on the tight cover. Look at the seam of the cover to the body to see if there is a gap anywhere to give some assist but be careful so as not to mar the surface. A gentle tap with a brass hammer should also loosen it. I would try and exploit the bolt opening by checking with a piece of mirror to see if it is clear to the cover. If so, then I would make a J hook held by a vise grip and tap gently on the vise grip to try and tap the cover off. A flat end on the J hook maybe wrapped with some tape should prevent any marks. Sometimes a straight drift punch that just fits in the cover screw hole, then cocked to the side to wedge it will give enough bite to pull the cover up. Be sure to not get into the threads. As always, just like with the wife, be gentle.
You call that a safe? Let me show you a real safe...

Some of them have LOBC covers.

On the top edge it has a part that sticks out. It rests against the curb and will not allow the cover to move.

There is the opening area on the right while the left spot is to remove the cover.

averagejoe,

Does one have to dial the lock to a certain index so all the wheel gates are facing the little knob attached the to cover plate in order to lift the cover straight up? or are those half-deep gates for that purpose and you still dial the lock to open and that aligns the little half deep gates?

Thanks,
Squelchtone

Do they ever use reverse threads on safe locks? If Not, why not

With the help of averagejoe, I found that these covers are locked until you dial the combination to a separate “cover” index. In my case, the dial ring had been scratched at 40 so I tried and it worked.

It’s an 029 1/2 lock which is new to me.

Thanks to all.

I’ll tear down the lock and post pictures later.

You need to dial to a certain index that lines up the gates to the cover remove position. Some have a dialing index on them but for others you are supposed to add or subtract a certain number from each number then dial that as the combination to remove the cover. I assume this is why djeds lock had a hand scratched "change" index on the ring so they would not have to do the math.

Any idea why Mosler had Yale make a lock for their safe? I would have thought Mosler would make their own locks.

They made locks for each other, IIRC. Same lock, different model numbers based on the company.

When Mosler was first starting out, Yale was already king so they used their locks for a long time. Even the Mosler 5H which has the Mosler coin on the dial can have Yale stampings on the lock case inside the safe. I guess you could say Yale was an OEM manufacturer for the other brands. +what Gwiens said =)

Thank you.

I should have noted that the serial number on the safe ties in to a build date of between 1914 and 1915. That's why I was surprised about the Yale lock.
