kwikset bump key depth (yes I tried searching first! )

Bump keys and lock bumping finally have their own area. Discuss making bump keys, proper bumping techniques, and countermeasures here.

kwikset bump key depth (yes I tried searching first! )

Postby blake1803 » 9 Jul 2006 22:43

I've been too busy having fun picking, so I haven't quite caught on to the bumping thing yet... something about the depths confuses me. I keep hearing these referred to as 999 keys, but the Kwikset depth keys I've seen on eBay etc only go down to a 7. To make a Kwikset bump key, would you use that depth or would you file down even lower?

I realize that bumping a Kwikset would almost certainly take moer time than picking it :) but I'm just trying to understand how bump keys work. I get that the cuts are as deep as possible, but with a Kwikset do you stop at 7?

kwikset does not have depths of "8" or "9".

0 = 165
1 = 170
2 = 195
3 = 220
4 = 240
5 = 265
6 = 285
7 = 310

btw -- if anyone is interested in a changekey/masterkey-changekey spreadsheet that will simultaneously handle arrow, dexter, kwikset, schlage and weiser locks, just let me know. i'm trying to find a suitable site to host the file since my server would go crazy if i got too many hits.

caliper or no

Postby raimundo » 10 Jul 2006 8:31

If you don't have a caliper, just collect some old keys, the ones with a factory stamped number are originals, some quicksets may be copies of a different key if they are copies, perhaps wieser or some such, anyway, an original key has five of the cuts represented on it and the spacing is on the old key, so you could cut any original down to its deepest cut, on all the correct spaces, and then you might have a bump key that would work on a lot of locks, even if the deepest cut on it was not a seven You can make a bumpkey without a caliper, Just don't go too deep, as this puts you beneath the pins an you won't be hitting them. Spacing and depth on bump keys seem to have some forgiving tolerances, close counts as good enough on most locks, So figure that you will probably be making more bump keys, that its not a thing you do once and never again, collect old keys, they can be made into bumps, you will have some idea of the spacing and depths from them, and you will have a variety of keyways after making some successfully, you will be your own expert. :)
