Schlage Lock

Postby tehcowlovah » 5 May 2007 20:26

I need help picking a schlage lock, I got a set of lock picks(5 piece) and have only been able to pick a master padlock(no. 1) and my friends door lock. Now, I just need to know how to pick my door lock which is a schlage lock. I think it might have security pins because the plug rotates a little when I turn the torque wrench. I found out how to bypass security pins through this video but it wont come open.

If it's a Schlage lock it does likely have security pins. Now, do not pick locks you rely on. You can and will damage them rendering them useless. Buy yourself a deadbolt to practice on.

Also, I just watched the video you linked to. That lock only had 2 pins. Your Schlage most likely has 3 security pins, plus 2 regular pins. It's not as easy as that video makes it look. Get yourself a practice deadbolt, to start with I'd recommend a Kwikset or Schlage, then come back and tell us what you bought to practice on and we can help you further.

Yes, any hardware store will have them.

I bought a schlage comercial deadbolt, it had 4 spool pins in the back, and a reg up front.

To threadstarter, that doesnt look like a schlage lock in the video. Being that the video maker is english, its probably a Yale lock, they are very common over there.

im pretty sure that your not supposed to pick locks in use IE: your door, your friends door, anyother lock attached to something you rely on.

I fail to see

Postby tehcowlovah » 10 May 2007 21:46

I fail to see the logic on how it would make the lock useless if you tried to pick because if you bought a practice cylinder wouldn't it also be damaged if you tried to pick it?

Well that true, I have screwed up a couple of locks in the past few years but it's better to damage a lock in your hand that you bought for practice then one on your front door you bought to protect you and your family. Besides, you may have a neighbor that doesn't like you for some reason and if he sees you picking the lock on your front door, he may be a big enough of a jerk to call the police to give you a bad day. You're not doing anything wrong because the lock belongs to you but still, not worth the trouble.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

There are some locks that when picked open and turned will get stuck!
They are designed to have a key in them to prevent this.
This is an easy fix for a lock you have in your hand, not so easy if it's in the door.
Then there is the risk of a pick breaking in the lock, again easy to sort if the lock is in your hand, not so easy if it's in the door.
