Hi there, I'm not trying to pick a lock - I'm trying to prevent it from being stolen. Is there anywhere in the brass body where I can drill a small hole to put a split-ring through, so I can attach the lock to the gate to prevent one of the keyholders from stealing it? I don't really have a problem with the lock being picked, as long as it still works, but I am sick of replacing the locks - they're keyed alike in groups in a master suite so I can't just change model. I have tried drilling a couple but the things seem to be full of springs! Would there be any particular place where I can get through without hitting a spring or should I drill a small hole in the shackle instead? Any advice/suggestions welcome, thanks in advance Kate

Easy enough... quick question though.. does your Papaiz keyhole look like a regular key hole or does it look like an X and your key is 4 sided? As for the place to drill it, you seem to be drilling the wrong side of the lock.. Here's an ABUS lock factory demo cutaway to show you whats going on inside: The cuts or peaks and valleys on your key face those pins and springs, but on the other side of the lock, where it says N-5 and the letter A of ABUS, you should be able to drill there, as long as you don't hit the shackle. Oh, also, I don't think you'll actually be able to drill through the shackle, that part is usually hardened steel compared to the softer body of the padlock. Good luck with your project, please remember to wear eye protection when drilling metal. Squelchtone ps. if you're not sure which side to drill on, send us a photo of your padlock where we can see the side that says Papaiz on it as well as the bottom so we can see the keyway orientation. The other way to know is to drill the side where the shackle stays in the padlock, dont drill the side where the shackle has popped out of.

Wow, that's great info - thank you so much! The keyhole is standard for a padlock, not an x-shape so I guess the springs just go across one side, as in the photo you provided. I'll have another crack at it now, thanks again for such a prompt and useful reply. Best wishes, Kate

Typically padlocks which need to be attached to the area where they are being used are connected via a clevis and chain, the clevis is slid on over the shackle of the lock usually before the padlock is assembled...
The other end of the chain is attached to the door/gate/whatever using a retention piece and some screws...
Most padlocks don't like to be drilled into anywhere unless they were specifically designed to have drill points for such accessories...

All valid points, and I was going to show a link to the Master locks that have this feature but... ktblonde wrote:...they're keyed alike in groups in a master suite so I can't just change model.

Drilling a hole seems a bit extreme as well as risky. Usually, the problem you describe would be solved with something like this (that's just an example and is a UK site but I'm sure similar products are readily available anywhere). Cheers...

Here in Italy I've never seen a padlock chain like the S&G one. In some large retailer storages there's a habit of drilling padlocks to link them to their small containers with a small steel cable. Since 1/3 of the padlock body does not contain any mechanism, it's cheap and easy to drill it. Then you have to find a cable to link it... your choice should be made after you find a cable. Depending on your location it could be easier to find the model EmCee suggested. Otherwise you'll have to find a bike brake cable and a way to link it to the padlock and gate. Let us see a picture of your results, we all love pictures Good luck

Master sell the chains and clevis with a rivet to install on any similar sized shackle. Abus does too.
