Chubb Crusier / Battleship Padlocks

Postby Colin » 15 Sep 2006 5:04

This might be silly questions, but I don't know so I'm asking. When padlocks such as the Chubb Cruiser / Battleship are classed as insurance approved how does this work, is there something you have to pass onto your insurance company to say you've fitted one of these padlocks or what is there to stop people fitting cheaper padlocks then when a claim comes saying they were using an insurance approved one.

Also on the face of the Crusier padlock there are numbers stamped, what are these numbers for if anything.

Cheers to all

Chubb padlock

It means that the lock is approved to the standards set by the Insurance Companies. I don't know if they care if you use them or not but it might matter for certain applications.

I assume the numbers are so that an attacker cannot forcibly destroy the lock and then rekey a new one so that the victims key would still work.

I would imagine this is useful for say a cupboard storing exam papers before they are handed out to schools, or ballot boxes after the vote etc. Annoying if broken into, disasterous if broken into surreptitiously.

If you have a business lockup or something similar then insurance companys will likely insist that you use a british standard approved lock to keep it secure and would be a condition on your policy for any claims etc.
As for the numers stamped on it I would think that is to verifly that it is indeed a BS lock.
Is it something like EN12320 ?

The numbers I'm refering to are stamped into the lock and also marked on the packaging. It is a 4 digit number 0654
