uPVC Panic Push Pads?

Postby Tyler Durden » 31 Oct 2006 16:12

I've just been asked to fit a Panic Push Pad to a uPVC door. They also want to be able to still lock it from the outside. i was thinking of using a normal wooden door type push pad and a keyed one side euro on the outside. Then removing the latch from the upvc mech Has anyone else fitted one to a upvc door? Do the ones normally used for wooden doors compatible with the outside opening. ie upvc handle & spindle.

i think youll find that they are simular but ive came accross many and to me they dont seem all that to be honest i mean plastic has soo much tollerance and it is possible to still get the door open from the other side if you know what to do but if a push pad has been asked to be fitted it would be unusual to be able to lock the door also as push pads are used on fire escapes etc
that ones ive fitted have been on new upvc doors with no mec in them straite out of the factory
it would be possible to modify an exsisting door in this was and what you are saying about removeing the latch would be ok providing you can unscrew it if not then be very very carfull if you take the mec appart
baring in mind not all mecs can be taken appart

as for getting hold of the right type of push pad systum for the job give D&G Servises a call on 01702 351 911

hope this helps you in anyway good luck with it
feel free to I M me about any upvc / double glazeing quereys

Duffels have a selection of Panic hardware, Pity you just could not use a thumbturn cylinder it would be easy to open from the inside and key operated from the outside.

Cheers for the replys lads. I understamd that upvc doesnt make a suitable fire exit door, but its on a commercial premises and the fire brigade have told them the door needs to have a push pad or bar. so the reason the customer wants to lock it is cuase there will be nobady there ouitside working hours. If its gonna turn into a job from hell i've already thought about suggesting a thumb turn insted. The other concern i thought of is if somebody went out the door and the push pad was fitted with the mech still in place and they pushed the handle up. surely pushing on the pad wouldn't dissengage the mach so it would become a greater risk to have it fitted.
Thanks again for the replys.

Does the door open inwards ? If so I'd be very suprised if the Fire Brigade would ever except it as a fire exit. Also attaching a Panic Bar to the plastic of the door just isn't very secure, how long would it stay on for if peiple use it to pull the door shut.

Some jobs just cant be done, they need to get an outward opening door with a Panic Bar.

Obviously it opens outwards. I'm not that stupid to not know a fire exit should open outwards.
Anyway. what I've done is put in a thumb turn and a fixed pad handle on the outside to prevent people being able to operate the latch from the outside when the door is in an unlocked state.

FEB and Savio both make panic hardware for UPVC doors and both have CE approval.
