Book reviews

How many people would be interested in book reviews here on locks and lockpicking? It might have saved me a few pounds a few days ago.

Pickmongers collection of book reviews

Postby pickmonger » 27 Sep 2005 7:11

I have posted a collection of editorial reviews of some of the popular lockpicking books.

Editorial reviews were mainly written by the publishers to help sell the books.

I would like feedback on what members think of these books.

That is the sort of thing. I will read it carefully when I have the time.

Consider also my overview of the "Complete Guide..." book in this thread:

Note, that I ding it slightly for being dated and missing high security, automotive and combination locks. But otherwise cite it a good reference.

Steel bolt hacking...

Some of us here were involved in the review/suggestions for this book, (disclosure: I was one). This is a book for newbies, especially computer administrator types. I wouldn't get it if you already know how to pick cylinder locks.

Let's approach this backwards...

What books are absolute garbage--which should we NOT purchase???

This will cull the lot down to something manageable.

All you need to do to get a quick answer to that question is go to paladin-press.com and search through their entire locksmith/lockpicking books and video selections and cross all of them off your list. Complete trash!
I know most people dont like hearing this since most want a picking book they can hold in their hands (God knows I did when I got started) but the MIT guide will teach you the all of the basics just the same and it'll probably save you time and a lot of money then having to buy all those books.
If you get more into this hobby and you develop a real taste for it, I recomend The Complete Book of Locks and Locksmithing series and ultimately LSS. Hope this helps.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

I think thats a good idea. I would like to hear what the pro's on this board favorite books are. Just a comment about Paladin Press, I too hate all of their lockpicking books except for Modern High Security Lock by Steven Hampton that book is great it covers all kinds of great high security locks.

:? I wouldn't be putting a lot of stock in the stuff you read in Hampton's book.
