This is the old Locksmith business info area and will be broken down to fill in the new sections below.

Curtain Wheel Picks (UK)

Postby bigfoot » 2 Jun 2006 16:14

Hi,

Have been looking at curtain wheel picks to buy recently and was wondering which is the one to buy. Tried safe ventures pick but not in all gauges and pick end can bend a little if pressed. Rimmer curtain pick suggested as all gauges can be bought ie 5g, 6g & 7g but cost adds up.

Any help greatly apprieciated.

Get a CB pick.

www.chrisbelcher.com

Need to prove you are a locksmith, but the best pick out there. Will pick all mortice lever locks, including the 110 if you put in some serious practice. :)

Bigfoot

A 2 in 1 pick is used for non curtained locks.

Some locks with low levers will make the wire feel Jammed try lifting the wire and pulling to one side to try to slide under the levers.

It will take a lot of practice to be able to open most BS locks with curtain picks alone,I will normally try to open BS locks with Decoders first.

Curtain picks

As has been mentioned, the Curtain Pick (CP) is for curtained locks! Use 2 in 1, buttonhooks or J wires for non curtain picks or buy a set of try-out keys.

ERA Fortress locks have been designed to defeat the CP and has a ward on the inside edge of the curtain to prevent the CP turning. To my knowledge the only CP that has been modified to account for this lock is the Chris Belcher 5g with the F wire.

Using a CP is pretty advanced stuff and unless you know how a particular lock works and what effect you are having on it with the CP you'll spend a long time scratching your head. SKS have just released Training Covers @£30 for a pack of 6 which are designed to assist in the training process by replacing the metal cover and allow the user to see what is happening inside the lock.

I advise you do a wider search on this site for CP posts, there are lots, and you will get all the information you need. Pinky Shrub, Illusion, and others, have all contributed major tutorials on the CP, 2 in 1 and picking with wires.
