"Locksmith complaints are on the rise"

Here is a semi-self-serving article that looks to have been written by a staffer at Angie's List. It's largely about Dependable and Basad.

http://magazine.angieslist.com/Articles ... -rise.aspx

Anyone have interesting stories to tell about dealing with the aftermath of these companies? I am not a locksmith, but I play one on TV (heh) and I can only imagine what this does the the credibility of all real professional locksmiths.

Anyway, it's a pretty good article, and will probably get your heckles up. They do have one good piece of advice, that speaks to how local professionals should market, perhaps.

"There are a lot of ways consumers can protect themselves from shady operators. Don't wait until an emergency arises to pick a locksmith."

I think that is good advice. If you locksmith has already been to the house, dropped off a magnet or whatever, made the company known, then they will be the first to get the call when the emergency does happen.

Canada is passing a law that requires anyone carrying locksmith tools to also carry a license. I run a shop in Alberta and everyone carrying locksmith tools, and or vehicle open-up tools MUST have that license. The licences are obtained from the Solicitor General and they run a criminal record check/fingerprints etc before handing them out.
