Tubular Kryptonite Bike lock problem

Postby cormu » 11 Nov 2003 16:41

Hi Guys a little question here , I checked the forum and seen lots of great things about Tubular locks, I have no problem oppening most of them I come across excpt one , My freinds has 2 bikes that have been locked to gether for 2 years cause he lost the keys with a Kryptonite lock this has a 7 pin Tubular , I have had no success with it The lock looks fine and seems to move freely, In my attempts (using southord 7 and 8 pin picks) when insert the pick everything seems to go finethen it starts to turn a fraction ... then i hear a light 'Click' and the pick stops rotationg,

My question is How meny of you have had success with this lock , was it easy to open and what method do you use. I just Push e tick in and turn slightly CW rotation and the lock pops open usually I have tryed both directions with this and it is same result both ways, the pick pins look like they form a key and have not been pushed back to far,

I would be very gratefull for all info on your experiances with this .

The bugger broke my car jack too when i tryed to force it :P

I assume you have lubricated the lock, and that it has not been tampered with and damaged it's functionality! As for methods, I have three,1. I bottom out the pick turn to the right and hold it in that direction whilst bouncing the pick in & out about 1/6" untill it's open, 2. I bottom out the pick then wiggle left & right untill it opens, 3. A mixture of both of the above, bouncing followed by wiggling. If you still have a problem try again and this time look at the end of your pick, you may find that some of the pins have not moved! you may need to regulate the picks tension, and the fact that the pins may move doesn't mean the tension is correct, some times they just do not move enough untill you have the right amount of tension. You can find out if this is the case by making a note of which pins are raised and to where (Helps if you have a decoder and measure off the pick depths) then try again, if this time you get a different reading you have a tension problem or you are not putting the pick in straight, ie your tilting it very slightly on entering the lock and getting a false reading... :?

Hi chubby thanks for advice,
Yes you are correct in saying that I have lubricated the lock and the lock is not damaged as far as i know.
you are also correct that sometimes it seems that some of the pins do not move but after several attempts they do form a regular pattern and the pins do seem to be in the same place .. I have been tempted to have a key cut to that code and test it ..
