Plug spinner for bumping

Postby m1ttens » 7 Oct 2015 6:52

Hey everyone, new to the forums but I've lurked for some time. I know that everyone generally frowns upon lock bumping but as LE, it's good to have as many tools in the toolbox as possible. I started with SPP and worked my way up on the three most common residential locks (Kwikset, Defiant, and Schlage) before a buddy of mine in the department showed me lock bumping.

I pointed out to him that there were some downsides to bumping like what if you turned it the wrong way- at least when I do that with SPP, I have my plug spinner so I don't have to restart from square one. He was stumped until he came back to me the other day and showed me the "Peterson over-the-key spinner tip" http://www.thinkpeterson.com/tensiontools.html. He hasn't bought it, but it got me curious to know how this works? Anybody have experience in using one? I would imagine this goes over the bow of the key and you just turn it really fast hoping the pins don't reset as you pass center?

I have a couple of the HPC FLIP It's and they are OK
works about 9 out of 10 times, when I need it to. If
it starts getting worse than that, it needs a spritz of lube

Yeah, I know how it works for picking, but not all locks will let the key out when you're bumping. I did see one guy from the Philippines on youtube who made his own plug spinner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xdtc_9GITn8. Peterson's tool looks like you just twist it with your fingers but unless you're super fast, I can't imagine people could generate enough twist to get the pins to the other side?

My plug spinner from Peterson's works just fine and generates more than enough twist. Granted I haven't used it bumping but it does exactly what I need it to do when picking.

I guess I'm trying to understand how Peterson's bump key plug spinner works since it goes over the key and doesn't look like it has springs. Here it is as it appears on their website. Again,it looks like it is something you just spin with your hand but was wondering if anyone had seen or bought one. I'm about 99% ready to tell my buddy to start learning how to SPP or make his own contraption like that Filipino guy did on youtube. Image

You put the bump key tip on the Peterson spinner, just like the regular tip.

That tip goes on this tool, presto change-o and viola you flip a key.

Thanks for the pic- really helped me understand it. So it still uses the spring that comes with the normal plug spinner, only difference is the key is stuck in the key way and the rest of the Peterson tool is required to get it to spin. Good to know it's not done by hand like I thought it was.
