Old door lock from a cabin

Postby jimu57 » 27 Jul 2015 20:18

Been working on a cabin for a friend. The front door had a rim cylinder that didnt have a key. It is an old (?) Russwin. I took it out today. It was really gummed up. Took it apart and cleaned it. Found a cut RU-4 that fit. Repinned it and lubed it, WITH graphite. Works nice.

But I have no idea how old this is. May not be old at all. It did have balls under a plain pin in each of the 5 chambers in the plug. Typical of older Corbins. Can anyone comment on how old this cylinder is? This is the first one like this that I have seen.

I can't answer your question, but BB picked one. Couldn't find any downloadable catalogs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15O586SY3UQ

I spend a lot of time checking out salvage and resale hardware stores, and have definitely run across a few of these. Like you, I noticed the ball bearings; between that, the casting, and what I was seeing them installed on, I always figured about 1930s-50s for age. That's an educated guess, though. Can't say with any certainty, but do not believe they're of recent vintage.
