Cylinder removal

Postby Hd78glide » 26 Jun 2014 15:30

Hi, I lost the keys for a 63 ford truck in a fire. I successfully picked the ignition to the accessory position then put a pin in the hole to turn it more to remove it. But it won't come out.

Do I need a key in the cylinder to remove it? Is there any other way to remove it?

Thanks.

No you don't need a key. I suspect you need to either use a bit more force when turning pass accesory position or possibly something to hook in the keyway to pull with.

Yeah, wiggle around the accessory position while poking. You just have not found the right spot yet. You'll feel it when you do.

Yeah, you might need a hook to get it started pulling out.

Try pushing in on the whole cylinder just a little while turning in accessory and wiggle.
As said above, use a hook to pull with.

The cylinder will only pop out about 1/4" then won't go further when I go past the accessory position. I was pulling quite hard but won't go any further. I did try turning it slowly to see if there is a sweet spot.

Some of the tumblers may need raking while pulling it out, normally the key would hold them in place.

You may have already done this but I just was not sure from rereading the first statement. After picking to assessory (left), you pushed a pin probe into the hole. While holding the spring loaded pin in, put more turning pressure on the plug, to the left. The plug should bind the pin probe. Maintain the turning pressure to the left while you pull the pin probe out. Then the plug should turn the rest of the way and come straight out.

It didn't sound as if you turned it past the assessory point.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but I did put a pin in the hole and turn the cylinder past the accessory position. At that point it slides out maybe 3/8" or more. But won't come out dmfarther than that.

I have yet to try taking the pins while pulling on the cylinder.

Very clear now. Raking the pins will have no effect. The back of the lock plug is somehow not completely clear yet. You might try CAREFULLY - so as not to crush, clamping a visegrip to the plug and wiggling back and forth while pulling.

Good luck as I am out of ideas.

Squirt some lube around the lock, take two flat screwdrivers and apply a bit of force. It should pop out.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and comments. It wouldn't come out because the metal plate over the pins was broken, causing the pins to bind to the ignition. I need to buy a replacement cylinder.

Again, much appreciated.
