Rekeying troubles with old weslock deadbolt

Postby Scofmicha » 30 May 2015 0:27

Hello, I am just learning how re-key locks; keep in mind that I very new to this and don't know any "lock" methodology. I recently bought a kwikset weiser kit and tried to re-key an old weslock deadbolt that I had laying in my garage. Of course I screwed up and the pins and springs fell out as you can see in the pictures. I was wondering how I could fix this problem? Any suggestions we be great! Thank you.

That's a fun weekend project you got there!

Here's a post with some photos that go through the basic process: viewtopic.php?t=10505

Hope that helps!

Firstly that is a door knob not a deadbolt. That particular brand will be a little tricky once you load your top chambers again be sure to place a shim between your follower and the plug when pushing back together or you might have to start again. Loading the bible from the bottom is a good skill and once you learn it it will just take a few seconds per lock. On the Weslock knob do not tighten the screw that holds the cylinder too much or you won't get your key back in.

From the pictures you showed, the cylinder is still in the knob. When you unscrewed the retainer screw, if the key had not been in the lock, the entire cylinder would have come out. This gives you access to the back of the cylinder so you can reload the springs and top pins. Try pushing through the screw hole or pulling from the front. And, like Cledry said, screw the retaining screw down only until the key moves in and out smoothly and do not tighten it more. There should have been a 1/4" spring in the back of the plug. You must have it to make everything work right. Good luck.
