How to remove this deadbolt?

Postby fatphatboy88 » 4 Dec 2016 11:07

So I recently moved into a house that was built in the 1950s. I bought some locks and door knobs to replace the old ones but I cannot figure out how to get this deadbolt off. I have two of them that are the same. I tried prying off the cover thinking there were hidden screws behind it, but I didnt see any. So I stopped there and figured Id ask for help before I tear something up. Im not concerned about the old hardware as it is going in the trash, I just dont want to mess up the doors. Attached are pics of the dead bolts. I cannot find a name on them anywhere.

Looks like a basic Kwikset double cylinder. On the interior, pry off the caps (or if that's putty, scrape it out) covering the screw holes, then remove them. Each half of the cylinder will come off on its respective side. Remove bolt and you're golden.

It's been a while since I've seen one, but I believe you have to insert and turn the key in the interior cylinder to expose the screws.

looks like an Arrow double cylinder deadbolt. What the other guys have said is correct - when you use the key (or pick it) you turn the cylinder and a plate moves, exposing the screws.

You can see a small tab on the plate that is sticking up on the inside keyway, that is what drives the shutter disc. The screws are Phillips and you need to use a driver obviously that will go through the rather small hole once it is exposed.

Correct, it is an Arrow.

OP, the reason you cannot see a name is because the installer elected to use a "drive-in" deadbolt. Standard deadbolts carry a name on their plates. And for others than may be using the search function, you can tell it's an Arrow from a few clues:

-The tiered design of the lock itself.
-The dots/design on the bolt face.
-The shutter's tab at the bottom of the keyway.

In terms of quality and strength I don't think anyone can top them in their price point. But that's just my opinion.

They did tend to have issues with the drive pin disconnecting from the bolt.
