Rekeying Abus 83/45 series 1

Postby mooch91 » 10 Feb 2021 17:40

All,

Recently got in to rekeying my home locks just to learn something new. Have a set of Schlage pins and a follower and rekeyed all entry doors.

Picked up an Abus 83/45 padlock to try to rekey to the same key as the house, to use for my shed. Used lock off ebay.

Cylinder is out, but I can't figure out how to remove the core from the cylinder. All signs point to the "detent" at the end needing to be released, but I swear this detent is fixed and cannot be pushed in, despite the core having a c-clip at the end that would make you think it should come out. Visually it looks like a solid extension of the core.

Is there a chance this lock cannot be rekeyed? I was under the impression that all Abus were rekeyable.

The cylinder is stamped with a "300". Lock generation appears to be Series 1 (red Z-bar).

Thanks in advance!

Thanks all, got it figured out.

Every video I've watched talked about a detent (see 02:00 in the video posted prior to this one) that is spring loaded and needs to be pushed in.

Mine must have gotten damaged at some point in time. I was trying to push and there was no movement. Turns out the detent pin on this lock actually needed to be pulled out to let the core come out of the cylinder.

Got it all done. Messed up putting the core back in and bent a spring, but I was able to salvage it by cutting off the bent portion. Guess there's enough play in the tolerances that the top pins and spring aren't exact.

Thanks again!

I have a couple of those, haven't put to use yet, good you got it, was going to say if you can't change Padlock, match house to padlock. Since they are a Zero or 1 cut, if I remember, a Blank, (zero cut) would work. Wouldn't do.
It is nice to have Boat Trailer, and Shed or whatever same as house, 1 Key. If others knew one key worked all, they could take padlock apart and make a house key.

First generation you pull that pin out; subsequent generations you depress the pin.
