Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

I’m trying to use internet “knowledge” to help me open my new old safe that is without combination . After some bumps, bruises abrasions and questionable advice. I think I know it was made around 1895 , has a Cary c-5 “straight tailpiece” lock ( no idea what straight tailpiece means to me) and I need to dial 4 numbers to open it . It seems like the last of the 4 numbers will be 40 and I will have to stop at 40 and turn the handle , it’s not a gravity lock that will stop on its own near 40. That’s what I think I know .Set me straight please !

photos please! we're gonna need photos.. otherwise it's like calling your mechanic and asking over the phone to determine what is causing that squeaking noise under the hood. :D

You may upload photos to flickr, photobucket, imgur or any other image hosting site you are comfortable using and then Copy/Paste the link to the .jpg or .png photo into your reply here so we can see what you have.

A picture of the entire front of the safe with the wheels is helpful as well as one that has the dial and handle in clear view and in focus.

Then once we ID the beast, we can tell you how many turns left and right and other useful tips and tricks. Please note we probably can't train you to be a safe cracker over the internet because it's a skill that requires lots of time and hands on to be good enough at it in order to open a safe that you do not have the combination to.

Looking forward to seeing pics of your safe!

Thank you so much ! I’m somewhat familiar with very basic manipulation having opened many combination locks in the past without knowing the combo. Those of course are very simple and use a quite limited number of combinations in known patterns so this will be an entirely different much more complicated task. Any help is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks again !

Ok yeah, that's openable and a fun project to boot!

And yes 40 will be the last number the dial is turned to before the handle is thrown.

I'll try to dig up someone elses past write up or photos this weekend, no need to retype everything from scratch
