In-a-floor keyed floor safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

In-a-floor keyed floor safe

Postby Frayedstring » 2 Nov 2016 9:19

Hi folks,

To start, I was a locksmith for 20 years, I haven't been in the trade for about 12 years now. I still work with locks now and again to help friends, key changes, auto lockouts etc.
I was recently asked to come look at a safe by a friend who moved an old house. There is an in-a-floor safe that looks to be about 30 years old. It has a safe deposit key lock only. I looked through your forum and found a topic with a floor safe that looks like the one I'm working on. I used a 6310D steel key and made a key for it ( I'm quite rusty so it took a few hours ) I can turn the key and feel ( or think I feel ) the lock bolt retract, but it will go no further. It turns a quarter turn then stops. I'm thinking I used the wrong key blank. What I need is info on what the lock looks like internally and how it works to retract the locking bolts. I can't find in a floor safe info or the company at all.

I will send photos of the safe and key asap

Only thing jumping out at me is the throat cut may not be deep enough, and the key is binding after turning a bit.

Or if the back cover of the safe is falling off, allowing the relocker to deploy. Good time to have that deadblow hammer, maybe
Worked for me in the past on a star lift out round door, just too lazy to go look in the books
