The discs are called gates correct? and someone has taken two screws out of the gates. I would like to find the screws if i could. if not make them. And wondering if the numbers are traceable to learn any history.
Thank you for the very nice photos!
Your lock is called a screw change lock. Changing the position of the screw changes the combination.
The round brass things are wheels, sometimes called tumblers. Gates are the slots cut out of each wheel. Each wheel has 1 gate, sometimes they have very shallow false gates around the edge of the wheel to confuse safecrackers trying to feel for real gates as they spin the dial and apply pressure to the handle causing the fence to make contact with the outer edge of the wheels. .
If the wheels' gates are all lined up by dialing the correct combination and the drive cam's (drive cam is the wheel that the dial is attached to by the spindle which transfers the rotation of the dial from the outside of the safe to the inside of the safe. you move the dial 10 degrees, the drive cam inside the safe moves 10 degrees.) gate is lined up, then the fence can slide into the gates which retracts the bolt work. The wheels all rotate around a wheel post. Some people call the base plate and wheel post a curb.
Unfortunately, best of luck finding anything on that lock's serial number, those records are long gone if they ever existed to begin with. Other parts inside the lock may be stamped with the same number as that back cover, but that varies lock company to lock company.
Hope this helps,
