steve newbie - gary safe that I am working on.

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Reason: fixed your image, the [image] command expects the exact URL address of the image file, it wont show a picture if the link is to an Imgur Album that has embedded pictures in it.

Hello, now that we got the other stuff with the link and the correct forum area in good order, what is it that isn't working for you or isn't usable? Do you need a hand with taking the combination wheels apart to figure out the combination so you can set a new combo and use the safe?

Please post a photo of the inside of the door so we know which lock we are working with. if there is a rectangular or round cover it will determine the procedure we tell you.

Thanks,
Squelchtone

In the interest of accuracy, the name on this safe is "Cary" not Gary. If you have been searching for help, that could make a difference. so, what is your dilemma?

Thanks for the response. I am missing two screws that make the connection from the dial to the gates. Will i have to make those or are they available somewhere. I will work on the pics.

trying to learn some terminology!
The discs are called gates correct? and someone has taken two screws out of the gates. I would like to find the screws if i could. if not make them. And wondering if the numbers are traceable to learn any history.

Thank you for the very nice photos!

Your lock is called a screw change lock. Changing the position of the screw changes the combination.

The round brass things are wheels, sometimes called tumblers. Gates are the slots cut out of each wheel. Each wheel has 1 gate, sometimes they have very shallow false gates around the edge of the wheel to confuse safecrackers trying to feel for real gates as they spin the dial and apply pressure to the handle causing the fence to make contact with the outer edge of the wheels. .

If the wheels' gates are all lined up by dialing the correct combination and the drive cam's (drive cam is the wheel that the dial is attached to by the spindle which transfers the rotation of the dial from the outside of the safe to the inside of the safe. you move the dial 10 degrees, the drive cam inside the safe moves 10 degrees.) gate is lined up, then the fence can slide into the gates which retracts the bolt work. The wheels all rotate around a wheel post. Some people call the base plate and wheel post a curb.

Unfortunately, best of luck finding anything on that lock's serial number, those records are long gone if they ever existed to begin with. Other parts inside the lock may be stamped with the same number as that back cover, but that varies lock company to lock company.

Hope this helps,

If you just need to make a screw or two, you hit the jackpot! Also, see the slot in the lock pack near the serial number? When you rearrange the screws to change the combination there is no indication what your new numbers will be. After you have the pack reinstalled in the safe this slot will allow you to figure out the combination. Make a strip of metal just big enough to fit in the slot. Turn the wheels to "scramble them. Now insert the metal strip into the slot and start to rotate the dial, while putting pressure on the strip to go further into the slot. When the dial stops, you have found your first number. Reverse direction and turn until the dial stops. You have found your second number. Reverse again and repeat the process. Your strip of metal will bottom out on the third and final number. This is essentially dialing the safe while pushing on the strip. The strip is merely pushing into the gates, giving you their location. It is very easy and very fast.
