Kaba Simplex

I've been working with these 5-button locks for a long time. I recently have had trouble with the locks that open exit bars like the Von Duprin 22. The problem is that the lever will not turn the exit bar cam far enough to pull the bolt in far enough to clear the strike. With the lock off the door, the lever turns the tailpiece nearly 90 degrees. A Phillips screw driver in the cam, pulls the exit bar bolt all the way in. I have adjusted the hub in the Simplex, the one with three set screws, as far as it will go. I have pre-twisted the tailpiece to make it pull farther. That worked for a while. And I am still having problems with call backs. Does anyone know what to do next?

I am making a new tailpiece that is wider and a little thicker in case the exit bar cam slot is too loose and the tailpiece has too much play.

Also, I have discussed the problem with tech support but was told simply to replace the lock. The lock appears to work properly.

I have also been told to replace the clutch. Does anyone know just what is happening with a worn clutch? I cannot see what is wrong.

Anyway I'm asking for experienced advice. Thanks

We sell these and I have had a few that I've had to go to the field and straighten out. Generally the issue is alignment. The tailpiece needs to be dead on, and I mean dead on.

Thanks for any answer. You're the only one.

Monday I went back out and replaced the tailpiece with one I fabricated. I used a piece of stainless tubing and a wider, thicker Yale tailpiece. This one is considerably more rigid and has no wobble like the original. The alignment was not a problem. I am thinking that with all the wobble, that when the handle turns, the exit bar socket just does not turn far enough. So far it is working.

The stainless came from a 1/4" diamond core hole saw shaft. The Yale tailpiece is wider and thicker and fits snugly into the exit bar cross slot.

If you make another tailpiece snap a picture. I can probably fab one up myself. Ive worked on some of them where all I had to do was file the mounting holes in one direction 1/16th of an inch to get the alignment proper and it functioned after that. I think that if the floppy tailpiece is not straight on thats what causes the jam so your ridged tailpiece would be a good solution and insure proper alignment.

[Mod edit: the [image] tag does not know how to show the imgur website, the link has to be to the exact file you are hoping to display in line on the forum.]

you can right click pictures and "Copy Image Address" to get the actual URL of each picture

I hope that photo worked. This is the tailpiece like I am using. I can make them like this for extra thick doors and they remain extremely strong and durable.
