Question About Specific Newbie Kit

Postby tetrakarbon » 6 May 2006 0:15

Hi guys! I'm not sure if this is the appropriate subforum, so mods please feel free to move it.

I have read the thread here: viewtopic.php?t=2144, which recommends some kits.

Going through my grandfather's attic we found a bunch of old and new keyed Master Locks. There were no keys, but I thought it might be a fun project to learn how to open them. I wanted to build a small lockpicking kit for this purpose.

From LPS, it looks like I want the slimline kind. But is there a specific setup that I could custom design? I don't imediately understand which individual tools are the most useful for my project. I don't need anything super-fancy, since I'm only looking to have some fun learning a skill over the summer, not break into vaults! But if you think there are certain tools which make sense to buy from the beginning...

Anyway, thanks in advance!

Hey tetrakarbon

If you're looking for some Southord Slimline picks to just get started, you should look into their small 5 or 9 piece kits.

I would recommend you getting the first one, the 5 piece kit, it includes a hook and diamond (both used majorly for pin-by-pin picking), a rake and a ball (used for raking), and ofcourse a standard tension rench. This way you can get into the hobby without breaking the bank ($20).

After you've got the idea of using the picks and opening locks, you can either buy more picks as to suite your style, or make your own, there are hundreds of threads on the forum about making your own picks from hacksaw blades, wiper blade inserts, street cleaners, etc.

P.S. There is another website, not sure which one, that offers a 10% discount to forum members if you use the discout code LP101, I'm sure someone will post the website.

Good luck!

The website with the 10% discount was the one you linked to orginaly. :)

As said, 'LP101' in the discount code box will be your friend. :)
