A quick question

Postby zip_it_good » 6 Nov 2007 14:44

I was wondering if it is best to start by taking one of the courses (foley belsaw, etc.) to gain some knowledge, before going to start a job, and becoming an apprentice? Or to just go into the trade with what knowledge i already possess?

Thanks

Establishing yourself as a new locksmith is mega difficult. And it all depends on what you do as a locksmith, and what your area needs. If you told us here what kind of skills you have then we might be able to tell you what you might need.

First of all just one thing I'll remind you of is that if you start off with word of mouth, that can take a lot of time and advertizing otherwise is extremely expensive.

Sorry to sound like a bugger, but your best bet would be to title your topics properly in the future.

And your question is kind of fuzzy, because we can't know the skill level you possess and if it is adequate enough.

Dunno guys , but it sounds like a straight forward question to me!
He is simply asking ( i think!) if he should go do a course before trying to become an apprentice locksmith, or not bother with the course and try to become an apprentice locksmith.
Kinda simple really :-)
He explicitly mentions the words "apprentice locksmith" , hence this implies that he is not intending to go work as a "locksmith" , hence he is not intending to set up on his own, but seek an "apprenticeship" .

The simple answer is yes!!! Go do whatever course you can prior to seeking an apprenticeship, so long as it's a proper course and the industry sees it as such.
It puts you in front of the guy that has not taken any course.
It shows to a potential employer that you are interested, and willing to go do some proper learning on your own, and not hang around waiting to be told to do so.

Regardless, any learning is always worth the effort, knowledge gained is never a burden, so if you have the interest in becoming an apprentice locksmith go do whatever it takes to get into the industry.

Good luck dude :-)

Note that he has two posts, and that hes from saskatchewan. thats where varjeal and renderman have a locksports club, I think that he should contact them and get to know some knowlegable people in his area, they could help him with skills and also with introductions to local locksmiths.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!
