small master lock is stubborn HELP

Postby Mr X 870 » 13 Jun 2008 13:17

I have a small master lock... and cannot get it to pop.
I have applied different tensons and used various techniques... any suggestions?
It seems that the pins are very stiff... takes quite a bit of pressure to push them up... with a feeler pick, tried the tenson tool both directions, used the snake rake, feeler pick and diamond pick, nothing seems to work.
I have tried to use light tenson and heavy tension.. even with heavy tension the pins are really stiff and spongy... will not catch on the shear line.
Any help will be appreciated... this lock is driving me nuts... i am a noob at this so that explains a lot.
Thanks

Try using the pencil trick, and analyze the key to see how far you should be raising each pin.

Is the keyway really loose?

There is a set of commercial MAster locks that come unkeyed. Un ... somethinged. You can set the pinning of the lock to whatever you want once with a special tool. I worked it over for about three days beforeI finally posted here (my first post if I remember).

OK, you went and made me look it up. It's the UP series.

finally got it to pop with a homemade torque tool... the southord one seemed to be to big for the tiny lock.'
used a paper clip and a snake rake.

the tension wrench can make all the difference sometimes. If you're practicing on a bunch of small padlock keyways you might want to make yourself a few smaller wrenches or modify one of your south ord's by tapering the part the goes into the keyway.

The paperclip worked, that's good, but you wont get much feedback through a paperclip and that feedback is the most important part of learning to pick without raking.

Good luck with the rest of 'em and have fun.

small lock, small key, needs small picks, master also makes a huge lock that may need bigger than normal picks, I don't know, I have just seen the lock in use.

your picks are not universal, they need to be the right size for the job.

and paper clips, bobby pins etc are not picks, they could work on some locks but they are not optimized for it.

I don't remember the master # system, so I don't even know if the #7 is a pin tumbler, if it is and you are having trouble in a small keyway, you are probably overlifting the pins just from the size of the tools you use.

It could even be a warded type lock, if so, easy to open if you know the trick and have the tool (just a half diamond with a shaft thin enough to turn in the lock will do it first time. like a key.

any time a master lock will not pick easily in the clockwise direction, just go ccw and it will open.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!
