Old basic cabinet lock (barrel key)

Postby coamp » 9 Dec 2021 11:12

Hello everyone

I got these two vintage cabinets and one of the doors is locked. I don't care about keeping the lock I just don't want to damage the wood. I removed the lock that was on the same side door on the other cabinet. they all seem to have the same lock except the other side has the same lock but mirrored. I managed to lock and unlock the lock by inserting a flat screwdriver and randomly pushing these pieces of metal upwards then from left to right to lock and right to left to unlock but it took a fair amount of pressure to do it. Any help would be appreciated.
PS/the key in the picture is not that lock key and I couldnt find replacements to try.

Lock brand: Elzett. Hungarian made

That isn't a 'basic' cabinet lock, the basic one's don't have 3 levers in them. You could take the lock you have to a locksmith & pay him to make a key for it, hopefully that key will fit all the other locks

If this was an option i wouldn't have bothered to post asking for help!

Why it's not an option?

Only one "locksmith" in the area where the cabinets are stored and his solution was to slip a jigsaw blade between the wood from the outside to cut the 5 millimeter thick deadbolt! Hes not really a locksmith i realized. he just copies keys on a machine

Ok thank you for the explanation, Squelchtone.

I'd take the lock that is already removed to a true locksmith at the first chance.

Cheers :)

This is such an unhelpful forum! Whats the point of a BEGINNERS section if the answer to the questions is, get a professional??? Thankfully there are helpful ppl on facebook and I managed to figure it out. I suggest closing this section since it's just a waste of time!

Asking an intermediate question in a beginner area doesn't make it a beginner job.
A beginner with no experience with lever locks can't magically pick a 3 levers lock. That's why I suggested you to bring your lock to a locksmith.
If you managed to open that lock, I'm impressed.

But I'm not very impressed by your attitude, so feel free to go ask your questions elsewhere.

Good luck
